Roofing Idea

I want to build a very simple covered area to work under during inclement weather. I want to do it on the cheap so I was thinking about using 2nd cut slab wood lapped in siding fashion for the roof, I figure with a 45 degree pitch and an underlayment of tar paper, plastic sheeting or perhaps a tarp, this would shed the rain pretty well. Has anyone tried this? I guess roll roofing or galvanized are my other choices but they certainly would cost more. I also wonder how long the wood would last in NC weather (it would probably be southern yellow pine). Just brain storming, let me know what your thoughts are.

Should work just fine depending on the kind of wood. Its how lots of early settlers shingled a roof. Just be generous with the overlap. You might check some discount lumber places, local guys particularly. They often have odd lots of galvanized or steel roofing. The colors might not match and you get a very colorful roof, but if your not concerned about aesthetics, you get a long lasting roof at a decent price.

If you go with the wood Id suggest spraying it WELL with water seal, both before and after you build it

You can also get pond liner with a 20 year warrantee to cover the wood.

Usually if you check freecycle people are giving away old bundles of shingles from leftover projects. As said above, the colors won't match, but they are free.

I don't think I'd put pine on a roof.

My granddaddy was mighty good with a mallet and a fro, splitting out shingles for side money. Most of the time he worked with either white oak or cypress.

You can even nail shingles up green...we'd butt 'em side-by-side, and make sure the overlaps were 2/3 and staggered.

I'd do metal & not have to worry about redoing it or rotting out or nothing for the next 40 years.

But I'm up here in Minnesota where snow loads & spring rains would just make a miserable mess out of your plan. Can be different there....

I would take the time to scrounge up some shingles. Stop by a roofing supply and see if they will give you a great deal on damaged bundles. It may look a bit funky, but it will last ten times longer than pine boards.
