What kind of woodwork and where is it located?

I'm a satin, low gloss type of guy usually.

Its woodwork around doors and windows, log railings....all pine..

I already have a couple coats of satin on but it's just too dull.

Try one with semi gloss. I think you see the wood better with semi gloss, less glare. A high gloss sometimes makes the trim look fake. It depends on how the light hits it and how much light.

I like gloss. Minwax. Though I have done carvings and put gloss on them and had a customer once swear it was plastic and not wood and I didn't carve it. He made a big deal about it too.. Not that i cared what he thought.

Here's a trick that's used on hardwood floors when finishing with polyurethane.

2 or 3 coats of gloss followed by a light coat of satin. Keeps some glossy look and adds depth.

And that's the way to do it! Gloss is a stronger finish and the satin takes away the glare.

You're going to hate the glare from semi or gloss...go with satin.

Point of info: Satin varnish is exactly the same as gloss varnish but with some dulling agents added.
