Farm Internships

I'm not sure if "Homesteading Questions" is the proper place for this, so moderators feel free to move this to where you see fit. I'm currently a student studying animal science and my original intent was to apply to vet school, but now I'm thinking that I may want to get involved with another aspect of animal science (specifically something dealing with livestock.) I have farm experience, but I'm thinking of possibly doing a summer farm internship. Has anyone here ever done an internship on a farm or hosted students on your farm? I guess I'm just looking for anyone who could share any experiences (good or bad) with me. Thanks

There are several state groups called "Farm Link" that have information and offers to look through.

Basicly all an intern is is unpaid labor. First try to get a summer job on a livestock farm.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely look into WWOOF and Farm Link. I'm looking for an internship because my current academic department really encourages them. tinknal, I grew up on a dairy farm, so I know all about unpaid labor. LOL. I guess I was just looking for something different to do. Most of the internships that I have been looking at are paid internships, but if the job is unique enough I would have no problem working just for the experience. Thanks for everyone's advice, I'll definitely check these out.

Since you already have experience with dairy it might be a good idea to expand a little into beef, swine, or poultry. If you are determined to go with dairy I know of a local farmer who in the past has had interns. I could check into it if you like.

You might also want to check out some of the research farms like Cargill, Moormans, et al.

Talking

If I've got it right, and I've researched this, an internship is basically unpaid slave labor. But you might learn things in the process.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I'm definitely looking into a few of your suggestions and sent out a few e-mails. tinknal, thanks for the suggestion about looking into something other than dairy, thats what I plan on doing. I made a few contacts today (some that even pay pretty well.) Thank you all for your help, I truly appreciate it.
