Help me with my TV

This is not an emergency , but it is frustrating.

We had our TV on a small stand -
I had placed it in a different location than it had been in & my husband tipped it over (!) in the middle of the night

It fell on its front from about 2 feet.
Now we get no picture or static or anything.....it turns on & off, but that's it.
We don't have cable or satellite, so the only thing I have to hook it up to is the VCR, but still, I should at least get static (I think)

Do TVs still have "tubes" in them that can "blow"?
If so, are they fixable, or is it not worth it?

If anyone has any knowledge of TVs and could give info. I'd appreciate it.
(it's a 1995/96 Samsung)
I'm just wondering if we should bother with it or not -

THANKS!

No tubes in that recent a model tv-sorry. You might try taking the back off and looking to see if the fuse(glass tube, metal ends, about a 1/4 inch in diameter) is still in the holder and intact. HOWEVER!!!!!!--DO NOT GO POKING AROUND BEYOND THIS. There is enough voltage in there to kill you if you get across the wrong areas. Don't go past checking the fuse-your life is not worth a clear vcr picture. My gut feeling is you would be better off finding/buying a working tv. Small ones are cheap enough these days.

There is a Transformer inside that HOLDS electricity, Capacitors and such~! So even Unplugging the TV there is enough Voltage Left over to do ya in~!

Yes there could be enough energy in there to kill you if unpluged 7 days ago (but I am not an EXPERT,older models with compaciters do)
Please consult an expert most time if you put it in the shop and it cant be fixed they will tell you before it costs you anything then if unfixable just donate its bones to them to fix others

I'd chunk it out before I'd open the back. In other words, don't open the back.

STOP!!!! I was not paying close attention when I answered earlier-if that thing turns on/off IT IS NOT THE FUSE. Forget even messing with it. Take it to the recycle or dump or whatever you have in your area to dispose of it safely. Something has been jarred loose/broken and there is no point in going further with it. My apologies for a bad answer.
Make sure you have it secured if you have to haul it anywhere to get rid of it-might even run an "X" of duct tape across the screen-just in case. Thanks.

Message from God: "Throw out your TV."

We just don't listen to God enough, do we?

God didn't say to your husband, "Trip over your old TV, throw it out, and get a new 50" LCD, with High-Definition cable box with 500 channels, and five-speaker-surround-sound-with-powered-sub-woofer, before the superbowl:" Did he?

Alex

LOL

even if I did get a TV it wouldn't do me any good for the game -

no satellite here
no cable here

Then again, even if we did have access, we wouldn't watch the game anyway - we're not really into football
(I'm not even sure who's playing - the Bears & ??)

Anyway, God apparently cares if I have a TV or not, but didn't make it warm enough for me to venture out to church this morning - it's 1 degree

While it is unplugged, open up the case to see if any broken pieces are laying inside. For the most part, it isn't worth repairing such an old tv. There is a yoke harness going to the back of the tube and that may have loosened up in the fall.

My grandfather had a TV shop (years ago). One of his employees was killed by a TV...nothing for the uninformed to play with...and believe me, if you have to ask if they still have tubes, you are SOOOOO uninformed!

My sweet DH will respond to this one;

DH reponds;
Actually, a '94 vintage tv does have a tube in it - the picture tube, and that tube is what has the capacity to hold the high voltage for several days. If you are relatively healthy, it probably wouldn't kill ya, (high voltage, but low current) but it will shock the *&^* out of ya, and cause you to hurt yourself. Please ask me how I know this.
I agree with other posters in that a ten year old Samsung is not worth the cost to obtain a repair estimate. Toss it in the heap, and buy another one....this time, get a stable support for it, and arrange the wiring so it's not a tripping hazard.

David...uhm...DH(whatever a DH is)

They do make a ...don't even know what they call it...a tv "hanger" type appliance that holds the TV and goes on the wall...I've seen them sold at furniture stores, hardware stores and some catalogs. Seems like the ideal way to put a TV in an out of the way place and be able to adjust it for best viewing.

I was 9 years old and in the shop when the man died. Believe me, it killed him. When I had a tube TV, later on, even though I knew what the differrent tubes were for, it scared the devil out of me to have to change one! Good thing about tube TV's was that if they started acting wonky you could just slap them on the side a time or two and they'd straighten out.

Heather, since you don't watch it much anyway, go buy a cheap little black and white tv for $40... while you are out be sure to get Hubby a pair of glasses, a pocket flash light and make him a map of changes you made to the living room while he was out... I keep a small flash light and a pair of sturdy slippers by the bed because the wife tends to move things all too often.

Our TV (if/when we get another one) definitely needs a different more sturdy support - DH didn't trip over the wires - he literally ran smack into the whole conglomeration - lucky he didn't hurt his you-know-whats!

Poor man -
He was, um, sort of mad at me.......

But after I convinced him it wasn't my fault (it was God's fault ) he's not mad at me anymore

(a map of changes I make is a GOOD idear!)
