putting a roof over an existing porch

I need suggestions on how to do this. We already have a back porch but want to add a roof due to rain hitting the porch and bouncing up and causing rot at the bottom of our back door. DH wants to attach the roof to the existing porch. Will that work? Will it be ugly? Thought I would get some opinions from others who have done this or know how to do it.
Thanks,
Susie

If the only reason is the water on the back door you can correct that far cheaper than with a roof. All you need is to add an exterior storm door.

Where it is rotting at is under the metal piece. It no longer will stay in place because it has rotted. I have also noticed when we get a lot of rain that it looks like it is warping under the vinyl siding. There is no telling what shortcuts were taken when they remodeled this house. We bought it as a foreclosure. It was on the market for a while. The guy that lost the house was redoing old houses and he had too many and went bankrupt. The bank finished the house. We had to replace the new metal roof 3 months after we moved in because the bank people put the roof on wrong and it leaked. It had to do with the way tin is suppose to overlap. We bought it as is so we had to borrow to get it redone. We need the roof anyway so we are about to tackle putting a roof on the porch.
