Nevada?
DH and I are on vacation (currently in PHX visiting newest DGD) and were talking as we drove though Nevada....wondered if there are any homesteading types living in north east nevada? So if you are out there or anywhere else in Nevada I would love to here how it is going for you? TIA, Sis

Due to all the nuclear testing there I'd be surprised if you'll find many..

Well thats just plain ridiculous, being a Nevada Native. Nevada has many misconceptions but to me the high desert is one of the most spectacular areas of the country. There are many small rural communities in Nevada and many living the homesteader lifestyle.
Nevada has a very small population with most of it concentrated in southern nevada around Las Vegas. But get away from the city lights and you will find lots of good people, Try Searchlight, Alamo, Hawthorne, Yermo, Tonapagh, Ely, Windover, and Winamucca. Great Hunting - Big Horn Sheep, and Elk, great Fishing - Trout and Bass, great outdoor sports like Skieng, Snowmobiling, 4 Wheeling, Hiking and Rock climbing, Horseback riding in Hundreds and hundreds of miles of untouched pristine wilderness. Explore old ghost towns, or take a boat ride, go windsurfing or birdwatching Nevada has much to offer.
Now having said that we no longer live in Nevada but I miss old "Battle Born" and her starfilled nights still call to me. One thing you need to do if you go to Nevada, after the casinos and shows in Las Vegas pick a point North, South, East or West and explore the real Nevada and meet some of her fine people. You will not be dissapointed.

Nevada Agriculture Areas
I live in southern Idaho just over the state line from Nevada. Nevada is mostly empty of people and mostly wild beautiful country. It is the driest state in the USA.
There are some farming areas like Yerrington, Fernley, Panaca, Montello, Preston, Clover Valley, and Fallon to name a few. Many of these areas have geothermal aquifers, wells can provide good clean WARM water often without pumping. You can heat your house, greenhouse, barn, shop, and your hot tub for free.
I really like rural Nevada. Urban Nevada is another story.

You're right Fantasy, Montello has more cattle ranching than farming.

sister~I've always noticed, when looking over overnight low temps, N. NV has some really cold spots! I suppose its the elevation and the dry air... Good luck and post some pics if you take any...

I live just north of Reno, NV, and my daughter lives in Carlin, about MM 285 off I80.
The weather really varies around the state. During the last week, our highs have been in the high 40's and 51 or so, while where she is, it has been much colder, down to the minus zeros.
We both garden, but my growing season is about a month or more longer than hers. The main problem here is clay, what we laughingly call, soil. If you want anything to grow it is always amend, amend, amend. The other problem is water. And it's a big one, like, none. We have had no moisture to speak of for months. Just day after day of clear blue skys. It's great for living, but hard on the water bills. We have city water, and our water bill in the summer hits about $150 a month. BUT, we are one of the few places around that actually has trees, and a very small lawn. Also, in the summer if the humidity hits 25%, which is rarely, we think it's muggy.
I love NV. There is always lots to do, if you want to, and outside of the few big cities, very much like to US used to be.

There seems to be some farming south of Wendover but one thing Ive noticed about Nevada is the farming areas are widely scattered areas where water is available.
Sister Pine what are you looking for? a particular kind of place or people?
