Bell Jar---Made from Cider Bottle

I just read this in a Old Garden Encyclopedia--------Soak a piece of string in kerosene, tie it around the bottle lightly, an inch above the bottom, set the string on fire and slowly revolve the bottle. When the string has burned completely around the bottle, plunge the bottle in cold water and its base will break away cleanly.

Thought this might be some help to some of you wanting a glass bell jar to make a little green house. Randy

Your better off filling the bottom with water to the point where you want it to break, might take a couple of tries, but it works.

Back in the 60's when one of the popular crafts was making things from bottles, I cut the tops and bottoms off jars like this.

It would have to be kerosene or slow burning in order to get the jar hot enough< I would think.
