Winter wisdom...

Here in northern New Englans, we have an old saying:

"When days begin to lengthen, cold begins to strengthen..."

It is generally so cold around here that I haven't been able to notice the verity of this saying.

This year, however, we had such unseasonably warm temps that it seemed like we had our January thaw without first having our December freeze.

But now that it is getting lighter earlier and darker later, baby, IT IS COLD OUTSIDE!!!

----Jill, who is bundling up into her thermals and zero-degree socks to go do the chores....

I hear ya sister! It was 6 degrees when I got up this morning, and the storm door was frozen shut. The day was noticably longer yesterday, though. I think it stayed light until nearly 6pm. I almost wish I could bring my chickens in the house this morning!

We had -8 this am. The wind is supposed to pick up later and make it-20 with the wind chill.
This is one of those days when DH laughs at me, because I put on soooo many layers. He says I look like the Michelin Man.

-10° with -26° windchill in Talmadge right now. It'll start warming up here in a week, and we'll move into the snowiest part of winter.

Here in KY my dad used to have a saying: "Shut the door, you think we want to heat the whole outside". I passed it on to my children.

Hey Melissa
If you decide to bring your chickens in the house, I'll bring mine over and they can have a chicken sleepover - for a couple of weeks until this weather eases up....

Move north where it is warm. It was 39 degrees on the way home tonight. Almost shorts and T-shirt weather. We had our cold back in December though.

I hope it warms up for you folks!

-9 a couple nights ago, the radio said with the windchill it was -30. My dishwasher froze. It warmed up to 20 today woo-hee I was thinkinga bout bathing in the creek. lol I don't have to tell the kids to shut the door anymore, they know the house will cool down to outside temp REAL fast when the door is open and it takes a long time to get warm again. supposed to drop back to - temps again for the next few days.

The wife and I traveled to her homeplace in West Thopsam, VT several winters ago. It was -25, so cold it took my breath away. The trees were popping and cracking... strangest thing I ever heard.

62 degrees right now here in Georgia with a light rain.
(I know, rub it in) If I could send you all some heat, I would in a heartbeat.
I despise super cold weather....

Well it is not 62 degrees here in my neck of the woods! It is cold and windy but sunny. Supposed to be 23 tonight so I will have to leave the water dripping. Guess I will need to cover my cabbages and beets too. I really can't complain as this is only the second time this season that we have been this cold but I really am ready for spring!

*grin* That's where we live. West Topsham, Vermont. We just had a string of cold nights and even the days. -21°F (not wind chill, just temp) on Saturday morning (1/27/2007). I log the temperature on my blog at:

http://sugarmtnfarm.com/blog/

That morning the frost was on all our windows even though they are double to quadruple paned and the frost had crept in through the walls along nails, door handles, hinges, latch plates, etc. A chilly morning. Fortunately the cold spell seems to have broken.

While I'm not fond of it going that cold, kind of takes your breath away, I do like it that we have cold winters. It kills off the insects and other things I wouldn't want to deal with that they have down south... I'll take cold over alligators any day of the year!

Cheers,

-Walter
