Looking For a Herding Dog

We are looking for a farm dog to work on our sheep farm. This dog will be our family dog as well as our farm dog. The dog will ride in the truck, work our sheep and live its life here til the end. A perfect dog would be a "retired" Border Collie from Field Trials. Older dog with manners is what we are searching for. We live in Northern NY and have a great place for a working herding dog. Other breeds are acceptable as well.

Check Glenhighlands

You might try Glen Highlands farm which rescues border collies. I don't go to the site frequently but they usually have a good number of older dogs.

I have researched them and found them to be strictly an adoption agency and do not focus on dogs with real working abilities. It is rare to find an above average herding border collie thru an adoption agency. That is why I am hoping to find a "retired" field trial dog, looking to do farm work for the rest of its life.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't know if you're willing to do training, but there's a dog on this site, Lewis, that seems to show promise. http://www.pnwbcrescue.org//

Jennifer, You might want to check into American Working Farmcollies as well as a BC

Found this on the English Shepard rescue:

Timber

BC/Collie/ES mix

Hello, I'm Timber and I am a 7 year old Shepherd/Collie mix. I was rescued from a municipal shelter several months ago and I am still waiting for a new home. I would prefer an adult only home where I will be pampered like the princess that I am! For more information contact:

I have the kind of dog you are looking for. No, you can't have him. He is from working/trial lines. I think you don't want a trial dog. They tend to be hyper and not particularly good with children. Look for a dog from real working lines. I got Hamish from Rebecca Harris in Michigan, but I don't think she is breeding anymore. Contact Bruce Fogt wbc@wildblue.net He has written books on training, is considered an expert, and breeds border collies. He owns my dog's sire. Breeders often have a grown dog that has been returned to them.
