????about feed

We have the chance to get about 600lb of feed from a neighbors laying house. The feed bin messed up and it poured out on the ground. My question is what can we feed this to? It looks mostly like ground corn and we didn't know if it would be worth it or not. Thanks for any help hate to do all that shoveling if it isn't fit to feed to our animals. THanks

You can feed corn to almost anything that is an omnivore or herbivore. Probably would benefit ruminants most - lower protein requirements than poultry or swine (not that the chickens wouldn't appreciate it!).

If it's a formulated feed, you should try to find out the mineral/vitamin mix in it before feeding it to sheep as there could be too much copper in it for them. I'd think that as long as it wasn't over a couple of months old, it would still have a fairly good nutritional value

Depends what's in it for medications too. By the time you find out and research it it probably isn't worth it. 600lbs of corn = about $40, more for cracking etc. but not worth much.

feed

I also think you should check to see if it got wet. Sometimes they can sour and/or turn moldy and that may not be good for some animals. I'm sure the owner will know what kind of feed it is and maybe be able to give you a label or similar piece of information.

Chicken feed should not be feed to cattle. Particularly since the mad cow situation erupted.

2,400 lbs SHELLED corn ruds around $240 bulk

And that was around 3 yrs ago., so 600lbs ought to be worth $60

If it comes from a commercial laying house it is probably laced with all sorts of chemicals, (medications ect), I wouldn't use it for anything unless, I could make sure it was "clean". If it's ok, you can still use it even if it is sour, just compost it and make some beautiful soil conditioner.

The question is - is the fact that the source isn't salvaging it any indication of it's worth or usefulness?
