Creepy critter trying to get IN my house
This is weird.
A few days ago, my son came home after dark. He said that he saw two animals beside my car. He said "They walked like a deer, but looked like they had wolves heads." As he pulled up, he said they just walked around my car, not running or anything. My one dog, who is outside, appeared scared, cowering in his shed.
Since then, as we come and go after dark, we keep seeing things run by on the edge of our vision. I have a light in the yard, but it doesn't get most of the yard.
Last night, I was at work. My daughter was doing the dishes and said she heard something digging at the door, either trying to get in or out. This door, is an exterior door, but it is in very sad shape. It leads to my back porch which has another door to get in the house. The panel busted out of it and someone patched it with something like plexiglass, then that broke and I put a piece of that foam insulation stuff over it with duct tape. Whatever was out there, broke a hole through that insulation about 6 inches across. My poor daughter was up all night afraid. She said it looked like a snout came through the hole. She didn't see a snout, but in her mind, the hole is snout sized. Of course, a large animal could easily bust right through that door.
I went out and looked and there are teeth/claw marks all over that thing. Not big teeth, but something ate it's way through the duct tape.
My daughter said that she never heard a peep from the outside dog, who would normally bark his head off. He can't get to that door, but he'd know if something was out there, unless he was scared like the other day.
As I am typing this, my dog who is in the basement (she just had pups), is raising a ruckus, barking and carrying on. She has not barked once since going down there with her pups. I am too scared to go look down there.
I am normally not scared out here. I never lock my doors, sleep with the windows wide open (in the summer), but this has me sort of freaked out.
Any ideas?
Jena

Got any coyotes or feral dogs where you are? Get a better light set up by your porch that really lights the area up soyou can get a good look at them. Ifthey're that aggressive to try and get in, Blast them!!

Jena, that DOES sound creepy.. it's like the opening of a scary movie! I don't think I'd like to wait until whatever it is makes it into the house, which means I'd have to go down with gun in hand to check on the dog in the basement.
Does this happen only when it's dark? Are you in the habit of throwing out leftovers that might attract something? Might be a good idea to stay in pairs when outside.. if something is getting bold it would be a good idea to keep a gun at hand outside.
Hope your mystery is solved and it turns out to be something pretty mundane.

For Christmas this year, my wife bought me a "flashlight". Well what she thought was a flashlight is actually a 2 million candle power rechargeable spot light. That thing will come in very handy when our dogs raise a ruckus as I can go out and "light up the neighborhood" - that thing is BRIGHT!!!
Usually I have some flashlight with a half dead battery going out in the dark and trying to see where I'm going. I've always been concerned about stepping right up to a skunk or some other such animal and not see it until I've stepped on it.
I'd suggest you go out and buy a rechargable spotlight. Not only will you be able to see what is "running by on the edge of your vision", but if it is feral dogs or some other wild beast that isn't scared of you, you can see to shoot it if need be.

Not the creature itself, mind you, but this thread reminds me of that bigfoot thread, where the lady (can't remember her name) had posted about all that freaky stuff happening. She hired and expert and all... then the next thing I know she said she was selling everything off and moving away.
Anyone remember that?

You could mount a wildlife cam and try to get some pics of whatever it is. Have any hunting friends you could borrow one from? I'd imagine once the mystery is solved that it will likely be more amusing than horrific.
If I were you, I'd be bringing the current dog in as a house pet and getting a canine or two with a little more self-confidence. That and a twelve gauge should help things feel a little more secure.

*shiver* Eeeeerie!
That's one thing that I'd shoot first and ID later. Weird that it's trying to get INTO the house. How about a trap between the two doors? And hope you don't catch a baby-whatever with momma-whatever waiting outside!

Better yet, do you have any hunter friends you can borrow?? I'd try to get someone to sit & watch for me. Make sure they have a good light & are in a place that they won't be noticed.
Prehaps it's a stray dog that was once a housedog. They are always trying to get in if that is what they are used too.

Zeal, that was Tarot Farm and she deleted all her posts when she 'left'.
Jenn, I'd be freaked out too! I remember once when I was a teen I kept hearing a scratching sound. It was a winter night, I was home alone and a storm was brewing. I found the noise to be two huge field mice scratching at the sliding glass door trying to get in. I couldn't even scare them off with the broom. Gave me nightmares - of course I could have seen too many movies by that age too!
But field mice don't walk like a deer, so ya'll be careful out at night, keep a light and gun close by.

ooh, creepy! *shivers* Can we have a warning smiley for creepy threads?
Anywho, Jena... I wonder if it could be coyotes too? Or maybe coydogs that were once pets? That trying to get in thing would scare the daylights out of me, I have to agree with the dog in the house and 12 gauge idea...

I would do a lil patrol thing at nite. Spotlight all around your property & have GUN. If its heard another time trying to get in I would head out front door with light & GUN, sneak around the back of house at kinda distance so you can see it but still somewhat safe until you can see what it actually is & take it from there.

Jena. My wife got me a 6.5 million candlepower flash light with haligen bulb and two rechargable 6 volt batteries in it. I can hold it out the truck window and light up the road much farther than the truck headlights on bright. About the size of a loaf of bread with a lens about like a car headlight. Has a carrying handle. Charger is included. Got it at Rural King on sale under $20.

Sounds like hungry coyotes to me, too. With the ice and snow storms covering half the country, we may start hearing more about wild animals becoming more aggressive as they look for food. Yep, I'd be feeling pretty creeped out, too, with something trying to gnaw it's way in like that. Good luck, hope you solve the mystery soon and get it taken care of.
