Question for northerners...
If you could go anywhere warm in the US to escape part of the winter (assuming you wanted to, of course), where would you go and why?
Cost doesn't matter too much, you have a job that can travel with you, and you will go for 3 months, however, it must be within the US. Also, the only animals you have are ones that can travel with you or can be butchered before you leave. We really don't know too much about warmer states so would like to get some input from others.
We have thought about places like southern CA, the old cliche of Florida, and others such as Arizona but don't really know much of these areas.

I was from Northern Wisconsin, right next door to Duluth MN. I totally LOVE living in New Mexico. Except it isn't warm here this time of year! Although not as cold as Northern Wisc. in winter! It's more like spring.
So, I may be of little help.

PS Arizona is TOO TOO TOO hot. If you are not used to it, you'll fry like an egg on the sidewalk.

My mother lives in Arizona. It is beautiful, but overpopulated. I have a sister in California, near LA. Too crowded, and it's going to fall into the Pacific. I have a sister in Houston, Texas. This would be a possibility. In the winter, I believe the weather is pleasant, much like our summers.

Before we had kids in school, my husband's work was very portable and we would leave (Indianapolis area) for a couple of months for a few winters. We spent one winter in Florida and one in Arizona and ultimately ended up moving to the Phoenix area for 10 years. Both were fun and warm which sounds awfully good right about now. If I could do it right now, I'd choose Florida. I would LOVE to be in the Keys right now.

It isn't too hot in the winter though...just the wretched summers. I used to dread the approach of summer.

Gila Bend, Arizona
Consistently shown as the warmest place in North America in the winter.

Prescott AZ, in the mountains. Still has cold temps, which I like, and pine trees, but still close enough to warm temps if you want to get away from the cold. I live in MN.

I would move to Hawaii. But I really do not want to move cause I love winter, not mud season like we have had so far.

At least New Mexico is a dry heat. I'm from MN (Near Duluth), and even though it rarely gets 100 degrees in the summer, the humidity will kill you. My father moved to NM to escape the humidity and cold because of arthritis in the knees. I would probably choose TX or NM, both rather nice places, not too overpopulated, nice dry weather. AZ is nice, but like someone said, very over populated. Then again, right now, they've got more snow than us! Did you guys watch the news tonight? Sheesh!!!!

Most of AZ is very rural, most of the population is around Phoenix and Tucson (mostly Phoenix). Some really beautiful spots in Arizona are south of Tucson.
One lovely little town is called Tubac and it is gorgeous. It is a winter haven for artists. Patagonia is another lovely spot. I love Wickenburg too...there is someone from Wickenburg on HT (can't remember her name).

I personally LOVE Las Vegas because it is warm, there are lots of opportunities to stay cheap, everything is walkable or accessible by cheap/free shuttles & buses, and I LOVE unique architecture. I could spend weeks there just walking around looking at the buildings. BUT, it's not for everyone.
I have family in FL near Orlando now so that is a nice trip.
I have lots of family in WA state so go there most often but it's rarely really warm.
I have never been to HI and my husband has only been once when he was a kid. Would probably go there.
I would also like to go somewhere tropical so how about US Virgin Islands or something like that?
Enjoy yourself wherever you go!

Florida panhandle is beautiful in the winter. Expensive near the ocean, cheap a few miles in land.

I guess I would be a snowbird and go to FL. I grew up in some nice areas there, and I would like to go back to see it. I imagine it has changed a bit. Crescent City, FL or Flagler Beach FL. But I would not want to be there for the summer. Dh and I had also lived in St. Petersburg. But that area is too busy for us now!

I grew up in the U.P of michigan, I am in Indiana now. I tease all my friends and family down here that complain about what they call winter. To be honest I would love to get back to the U.P., I love snowmobiling snd downhil skiing.

I currently live in Marquette, MI which is towards the very top of Michigans Upper Penninsula. If I was presented with free round trip tickets today I would book a flight to Fairbanks, Alaska! LOL
Believe it or not I grew up in San Diego, CA where we "winter vacationed" in Yuma, AZ every year with our three-wheelers.

I love the Florida keys. I'd like to talk DH in actually moving there when we feel that the farm is too much to handle (age). Although I would miss family here in NY and New England. If I could fly back at anytime I would go for it. Other choices would be NC, SC, TN, KY. Florida is boring; too many old people. I don't think it's good phsychologically to just be with old people even if you are, like in 55 and older gated communities. AZ and CA too far away.
