The sad part is that this is not 'new'. We built our house a little over 19 years ago, and had someone (whose house had been broken into) recommend that we put in a lock that couldn't be "bumped", so we did some research and went with the more expensive Schlage locks on our house.
With the internet now, unfortunately every potential crook can find this out.

Locks really do only keep honest people out -- if a thief thinks that you have something in there that he wants, he WILL get in.

The contractor who built our old house some years ago said he didn't even put deadbolts on his house. He figured bad guys would get in no matter what and he didn't want them to destroy the door frame when they did. Our house would be very easy to get into if someone wanted to.

Unfortunately, as someone else said, this is not new. And yes, a burglar will eventually gain entry if determined enough. The idea is to "harden the target" and slow him down.

General run-of-the-mill Burglars tend to go after the easier targets, if your doors and windows are locked, he'll usualy move on to the guy that leaves a door or window unlocked, or a key under the welcome mat.

I definitely agree that a criminal minded person who is determined to get "into" a house WILL find a way. However, my thoughts are, don't make it easy for him (or her) .Make it as hard as you possibly can to slow the thief down and discourage a "quick" entry. They may move on.

We use the old-fashioned way:

Great Pyr for the aggressive barking and first line---The light work.

Great Dane for the heavy work. She lives in the house and it IS hers! She drags in coyotes all the time. Warm but rapidly cooling off. Drags them into the yard that is.

Owner with marginal sense of humor and the wife going through the change. When she is in her nuclear mode she doesn't need a weapon.

She had a shotgun in someones gut two years ago. Drunk came to the door and insisted it was his house. She pushed him right back to his car and then she broke out the headlights.

Contractor/neighbor was driving past at the time. He sat in the road and enjoyed the show.

Then the fool/drunk developed a real problem when she called 911.

He was happy to see the troopers.

Wow, I never knew Danes were so aggressive... very interesting and good to know.

Sounds as if the Dane is you second line of defense behind your DW..

Any means conceived to stop or keep people out can be defeated or gotten around,
the only sure means is to have someone watch your back while you watch their back.
A 'BIG' dog is a very good idea!

They were designed originally for hunting big things. You can't fight instinct I guess.
