odd question...

Okay, hopefully I won't come off like a total idiot, but I have a question. I have heard people suggest using breastmilk to treat an eye infection. My dog has a goopy eye for a few days, would it work to put goats milk in it?

Just thought I would ask...

Well, that's a new one on me. Never heard of it before. Although that may be where the expression "getting an eye full" originated.

I would imagine that it would have some healing properties if it hasn't been heat-treated. Fresh would be best, I'd assume.

It couldn't hurt anything, right?!?!

Well, it can't hurt I've used breastmilk for pink eye in my children. I hadalso heard that it works, and within a few hours my youngest's eyes were clear, so I used it on my toddlers too (don't worry I used a pump and eye dropper :baby04: ). Also worked for them just as quickly. But I thought that the reason that breast milk cleared it up was because I was exposed to the same virus and my body produced some antibobies that were present in the milk.

Just dont hurt the goat trying to drag it close enough to the dog to get a good squirt in, lol.

I have no idea about goat's milk but I can tell you without any reservations that human breast milk WORKS just as you said. Have used for both of my children AND my husband, who used to get sties a lot and interestingly hasn't since then!

Yeah, yeah...he rather enjoyed the treatment. Gives new meaning to the phrase "getting an eyeful."

As the others said, try it -- couldn't hurt. The fresher the better.

I've used breast milk for earaches as well, and it worked. Not producing anymore, so have to resort to the old ways.

Does this mean I gave my family an "earfull"? Reese

My grandma used to raise lots of livestock and always said milk worked the best for eye problems,... if she didn't have any animals producing at the time she'd just use cow milk from the store. I've followed her advice and had pretty good results for the most part.

Sounds like a promising home remedy.

Think it would help chapped lips?

I used breastmilk for my son's stopped up tear gland when he was an infant. He was born with it, had an allergic reaction to the meds the doc subscribed. Old lady across the road told me to use breastmilk and it cleared up overnight.

Boric acid makes a great eyewash. Used it on my youngest who had malformed tear duct upon arrival. The instructions are right on the bottle.
