What to do with old boars?

Talked to some folks this weekend that were going to retire 2 boars, asked them what they were going to do with them and they said, "bury them". I never like to waste anything, but I can't figure out much else they could do with them other than maybe dog food...Does anybody have any other suggestions?

Send them to the local Bar and Grill and let them talk the ear off the waitresses, with the rest of the "old boors."

Yep, sausage, or send them to market. Market prices aren't great for boars, but should be worth the trucking.

They either mix them in with other pork for sausage or else put it in a type of sausage that's going to have the taint spiced right out of it. With pork prices as low as they are they probably aren't worth selling unless you live right next to a sales barn.

We used to take and fix them then feed them hay and little grain for thirty days. take them down to real lean then put on gain for couple weeks orlittle longer. then butcher. nice meat. fix them standing up. make sure they drain well when fixing.

Carry em to market, if you don't want to bury them... but make sure you carry some good hogs with em, cause the boars won't pay for gas and commission fees. Little while back my Uncle carried a boar to market, got 5$ for it...

Now if it were a wild looking boar, with tusks, it might go for several hundred. Uncle captures wild hogs and the bigger/uglier/tuskier they are, the more he makes... unless they look tame, and then the wild hog hunting operations won't give him nothing for em...

I have eaten very young boar, and it is an adventure, at least during the cooking process. I won't willingly even fool with butchering a boar, of any age! :1pig:

I've had boar once in Scotland. Didn't get past the first bite and plan to never have it again. There are a number of people who feed their dogs raw. If you could hook up with one, you might be in business. Try a post on the barter board and/or the pet forum.

In Indiana boars are selling anywhere between 15 and 35 cents a pound at the local auctions. A 500 pound boar should bring a minimum of $75.

I saw a 750lb boar go through our auction for something like three pennies a pound. Do a search - there are quite a few threads about this on the pig forum. Seems like quite a few are adventurous there - many castrate them, and wait a few months and then eat them. Someone else is experimenting - seeing how old/heavy he can go without boar taint - I think he's getting close to a year, I can't remember.

I agree, neuter them and then let them go awhile to get rid of the taint, then butcher them. Beats just throwing them away.

Truth it can be done.I was going to cut one.I was going to hold it and my former FIL was going to cut it.Well I'm waiting He couldn't do it So we switched and I cut it.

I killed a 3 year old Boar last Spring.Didn't have a strong taste,but was very tuff.

U can use a elasitater?? Big rubber band put on with a spreading tool, OR shoot him up, knock him out, and giter dun. Like said before, feed him grain, give him a month or 2 then make sausage outa him. Oughta be a coupla hundred lbs of it.
