cream seperators?

1) Are they real a necessity?
I mean.....
can you not just let the milk set and spoon off the cream?
or is that not real efficient?

2) What is a great model. Hard working, simple, reliable.

3) Electric or Hand crank? Is there a model that can be done both ways?

They require alot of attention when cleaning... I am a low maintenance kinda gal so we just dip off the cream.

It depends on what kind of milk you are getting. With fresh cows milk we just let the cream rise to the top and skim it. When we are getting fresh milk from our goats, we have to use the cream separator. A cream separator is a bit of a pain to use, but we absolutely love butter made from goats milk. It is definitely our families favorite.

We got our cream separator at an auction. It is an old McCormick model and can be used electric or hand crank. It works great.

It really depends upon how much milk you have to process. A few quarts - skim.

I suspect that a sun tea jar would work. Fill it with raw milk, let thh cream rise, then drain off the skim milk.

Of course, that is for COW's milk: I have heard that goats milk requires a seprator.
