Here in the interior you can also find cheap rural property not only through the State Mental Health Trust in the link you posted, but also through other state auctions and sales as well as through several developers or land companies that will finance without question.

You can also look for land for sale from the University of Alaska, th State of Alaska, and the various boroughs and municipalities. Buyer beware, though, they often are very rural and have little if any infrastructure built-up nearby.
As I always tell my husband, we have to find a way to telecommute to work so we can go buy a 3000-acre+ working farm complete with house, guest cottage, pastures, hay and grain fields, livestock, and all equipment in Canada for $200K US. Those places are usually cheap because there are no jobs locally...

I got my 80 acres from an auction. I would really suggest that anyone thinking about doing this walk the land. As It has been said much of the auction land has no roads in, no water or ele. There are deals out there right now I am helping someone in the lowere 48 get farm land (they really wanted 40 acres min. with road, ele near enough and close enough to a pop to be able to shop for the basics, have medical near enough. So far the best that I found was at an auction but it is only 37 acres. but it is has everyting that they wanted and it is only $140,000. I found one that was much cheaper per acre but it would cost big time as it it in the middle of nothing in habited. over 400 acres for $140,000. I did not even let them know about that one as it did not meet their needs.
There is a lot of land up here but alot of it is real rough. Swamps might look great from and airplane but forget being able to use it. Also some areas are ready to go up in flames due to spruce beetle problems.
Land is out there just becareful

cheap land
There is always a reason for land to be selling cheap. BEst you find out before you buy rather than after, then its too late. Just some advise from an old man that has paid for his lesson about cheap land.

I have found that the real deals are on hard to access property. ATV, snowmachine, jetboat or airplane. I found a NICE lot on a lake, GREAT PIKE FISHING, $4500.
2 hour drive then 3 hours in my boat. Not very realistic.

Then you have many people in Alaska who choose to live in the bush where you can only fly in by float plane or whatever. Some of them only come out once or twice a year.

I would love to be able to do that, but realistically it is impossible. I still need to pay the bills.

It can be very hard to even have a subsistance living out in the Alaska bush without some cash coming in somewhere. Costs an arm and a leg to get supplies out there too.

I would hope so! But I'd be looking at it as a hobby/retirement thing - a full-time requirement for work but not counting on it for income. If you plan for the worst an hope for the best...

Better you check your level of ownership too....many of these are old cadastral or geophyisical survey based parcels. (Not sure if cadastral is the right term, too many years since I did real estate) Many of them are described by meets and bounds and when the entire parcel is thick woods, partially swamp, and you are out in the tulies with no references....you can run into trouble. On and make sure you understand about the various legal accesses too, lol
Back when they had the land lotteries, I "won" a parcel outside of Fairbanks. I had driven by the area, even walked some of it and thought I knew what the lay of the land was. Wrong! It was 85 % extremely steep and I decided not to purchase it from the state....
