'Katrina cottages' to be Available at Lowe's

According to an item in today's paper Katrina cottages will be available at all 1,300 Lowe's sometime next year. Prices are expected to range from the high $20,000 to around $50,000. Most are expected to be used for hunting lodges, cabins and low-income housing. Apparently the military is also considering them for some on-base housing.

Is the military thinking along the lines of temporary living quarters?

The cottages wouldn't be bad for cabin or housing while a house is being built

The architects website iswww.cusatocottages.com

It will be interesting to see what's included in the Katrina house kits. (I understood it would be kits.)

At least they have character.

Angie,

Everything will be included even appliances. The building cost, foundation, pier material and HVAC are not.

Home depot has a nice two story "cottage" The bottom is 16wx18l and it has an upper story just as big and the walls are built to where you can stand upright against the wall so its a full upper story. Doesnt sound like much but when you walk in the display model you are pretty suprised at how much room there is in it. COmes with storm windows double front door etc. The price for the one built on your site here is right at 7 grand.

DS,

Is that small enough to get around building permit/codes?

When I was a girl little houses like these were all over the south. I've lived in some of them. Usually tho there would be a front room, then the bedroom then the kitchen in the back. They called them 'shotgun houses'.

I believe Lowe's also has the two-story 'sheds' mentioned above. I was also impressed with how much room is in one. Stairway at back with room enough under it for a 1/2 bath. Lots of room on one side for an efficiency kitchen. Loft upstairs was, as mentioned, virtually all liveable space.

On the military reference the article only said they were being considered as and alternative to dormatories. I could see them for young officer/senior NCO quarters.

Dripping Thread: Thats a dandy idea for rambunctious teenage boys. The French have been doing it for centuries and its a tradition amongst the Creole french in Lousiana as well. These little seperate houses for the older boys are called Garconiere. Amongst the Creoles, the idea was that gentlemenly entertainments wouldnt disturb the ladies of the house.

Ive seen 2 story gambrial barns in Tulsa for that price, bout the same size

I thought at the time, a guy could build sheds on 3 sides that would allow the main barn top for hay, the bottom for straw, grain, feed bins or barrels. One side for milking cows or goats, one side for chickens, and one side for a few pigs, or tractor and tools. Lots of possibilities, but yet thats pretty high dollar for those who dont have it, like me lol

Yeah that's fine except they are not offering the two smallest ones the Bunkhouse and the small one bedroom. The smallest they offer is a two-bedroom 544 square foot. I had hoped to maybe put one on the homestead as a studio, but I am more interested in the smaller ones.

Oh well.

check out this site, it should have inexpensive plans then you can customize and build yourself or have built...

http://countryplans.com/

I've bought the two storied plans and hope to have it someday.

On the 16' x 16' two-story I could see a company turning them out in a factory and then delivering them on site. Build first and second floors separately and deliver on one trailer. Use a crane to sit the first floor on a prepared foundation, then the second on the first. Could be prewired to where the wiring on the second floor just needs to be connected to a breaker box on the first floor. Might come say 95% finished.

20 -50 grand geeze seems really high for no more than your getting .
I scratch build a 24x30 garage including slab and eletric doors and window for $8000. Put another $2000 with it and you could frame and finish the walls and have a nice two bedroom . Built my sisters house 2600 square ft two story for 48,000 four bed room two and ahalf bath . will rebuild what the fire department called a total loss of the house for under 10,000 .
If you figure the materials and do the work your self on the framing you can save a ton .
a 24x24 or 24x30 slab house with radiant floor heating (supplied by a 40 gallon water heater) single bath (roughly $1000 for a one piece tub shower toilet and vanity and tile floor) around 1600 for windows and doors ,1400 for floor covering, trusses roughly 1000, framing lumber 900, sheeting 500, sheet rock 1200,insulation500, slab 1200, wiring 450, plumbing 500 ,siding 800,paint 200 and add another 800 for kitchen and utility (include washer dryer range and fridge purchased used ) and finally 500 for the roofing . 720 square ft home for around $12000 . Granted thats avoidning the Kit price mark up .
