Where too Now???

..............Got my place sold , closed , and now I'm moving out . I've purchased a used 5th. wheel which I have to pickup in northeast iowa on tuesday , the 5th. I've rented a trailer space in weatherford for the time being , as i've got to return and finish moving the rest of my stuff to the storage garage . I've got to give some thought as to where I want to "move too" as just wandering around isn't cheap with the current price of diesel . My dream has finally come true and I'm alittle scared cause I don't feel like I have any roots without a piece of land to come home too each evening . What , I won't miss is the property taxes that were continually going UP every year which was one of the motivational factors in deciding to sell my land .
................Actually , having this much freedom is scary in a way as I'm a home body and like an old heifer I tend to follow the same path to and from where ever I'm going . I've considered work camping , becoming a caretaker , etc . So , over the next few months guess I'll explore all these options and maybe some more. Atleast now , like the turtle , I can carry my 'shell' with me . My 5'ver should last quite a few years if my trailer is as well made as I believe it is . I don't want to do anything "full time" anymore except enjoy my new freedom and work part time to generate enough cash flow to pay my living expenses and maybe save alittle . I fell very blessed as all my equipment is paid for and I can find my new home without running all over the country and wasting money .
...................Well , folks I'm just thankful that I still have this online community to fall back upon for advise and maybe I can make some new friends as I slowly decide where I want to start my next grubstake . thanks for listening , fordy...

Fordy - you may want to consider what one of my aunt/uncle teams does.

they live in a 5th wheeler year round. They become park hosts. Put in a bid and then they get to "work" about 4 days on 4 days off during their contract period. You can get your park area, and laundry facilities, electricity and some pay (depends on what you ask for in your bid package). My aunt and uncle just found out from May 4th thru Labor day they will be 150 miles from here, their first choice of places they applied to.

Maybe after you get settled into the RV lifestyle this could be for you. If you want, I'll e-mail and ask what website or address to write to for this info, or maybe I can find the booklet they sent me earlier this summer.

Oh yeah, most do winter in the southern 1/2 of US, and the more northern states when road conditions are better.

Maybe you should try to find a magazine that will pay you to write articles about your change of life adventure and your travels.

Mt. View is one of the places I always stop at coming back from visiting my folks in Tx. In the warmer weather the musicians are out on the town square playing music.

And Waterford OK is one of the places I always look forward to seeing to see the wind generator farms there on the West side of town, and the furtherest Cherokee Trading Post. Exit 108 I think.

Fordy, good luck on your new adventure! I think any of us would be a little shaky, not knowing where we're going from here, but your posts have always seemed sensible, and I know you'll be ok, where ever you decide to put roots down, even if only temporary ones! Jan in Co

Fordy,
Beyond the obvious, this is going to change your outlook on life and open new doors you cannot begin to imagine.Your preconceived notions arent going to be anything like the reality. And the reality will be wonderful.

Did it for 2 years, changed us immensely.

Best wishes and keep in touch.

Good Luck to you. You are living my dream. I'd always dreamed of picking out a few places that I thought I'd like, for all the many varied reasons. Then spending a whole year there so I could experience the weather, seasons, people. Do this for a few years & then decide where to settle down. Instead like most people, I've let circumstances determine my life, rather than my heart. So keep us posted; I'll just live vicariously!

Fordy, I'd be scared to death!! married one at 14, had my own home for next 16 years--remarried and owned this one 40 years-- i'd feel like my roots were gone-- i understand the adventure, and admire those who do it- i just couldnt. hope you find everything you want in this new adventure. humm-- to be able to just get out and drive ahead of ice and snow you hear is coming --to go where its warm till its over--yes, i understand the thrill--just not for me--

What an awesome adventure you have ahead! DH and I have considered the same idea..have a used 5th wheel with newer diesel truck to pull it. Health insurance is our main drawback.

Will you still have access to the internet? If so, check out these websites for rving:

http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm AND http://escapees.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x

DH fantasizes while on these sites, a dream for the future. I especially like the beginning RVing and Cooking areas. You can get your questions answered there as well.

Enjoy your "nomadic" life, and I hope you find a place to set your roots down.

Nappy

Since it's December there is no doubt that the first direction would be south. I envy you and wish you the best. You will slowly feel comfortable with the new found freedom and will wonder why "stuff" has tied you down.

Fordy:

Can't say I know you well, but this thread reminds me of a book by John Steinbeck "Travels with Charlie". It is about living in his travel trailer for an extended time with his dog Charlie. If your experience is anything like his, it is worth doing.

Good luck.

Look in the property for sale section here. Someone has a cute little farm house on a small piece of land for 35k. Seems like a great cheep place to operate out of for a little while.
