Answers to some of your questions:
The little log cabin is 200 sq feet. That size was picked since in this area you don't need a permit if it is 200 sq ft or less. It was built with logs pulled out of the woods that were already down. No live trees were cut. So it kind of served two purposes - cleaned out the woods and gave me an opportunity to try building my own log cabin. Around $1000 total cost and that was for dimensional lumber for floor and roof and then the metal roof. Right now I just use it for storage but as soon as the main house is done, I'll turn the little one into an off-grid quest house. My little experiment in off-grid living and an opportunity for others to experience it.
The main house started Dec 1st of 2005. Exterior is mostly finished and working on the inside now. It is 1900 sq ft, 1200 down and 700 in the loft. While building, I have an RV trailer that I stay in.
