Unhappy All For Nothing

I had a little Propane Heater, didn't know if it was any good. But anyway today I decided to hook it up in the Bathroom.

Got the Lines all run, checked for leaks.Went to light the Heater nothing, let the gas run for a long time to the Pilot nothing

I gues I'll just go get another Heater.

Could it be just the little thermal coupling gone bad? Did the Pilot Light at all?

No the Pilot didn't light at all.Its got one of them Strikers on it,but it wasn't working either. So I was using Matches.

My Wife turned it all the way up thinking the Burner would light but it didn't.Might be something stopping up the Line.

I don't know nothing about this Heater it came out of an old House.I can get a New one for $130 figure it will be well worth it having something I can trust.

I'd second the thermal coupling---if it's not working you won't get it lit. Cheap fix.

Check all the openings for dirt dauber nests. They love tight little spaces. I fixed a heater for my neighbor that had that problem

I know this sounds obvious but is there gas in the tank? Do other appliances use gas? DH just hooked one up for a friend and it took FOREVER for the gas to come thru the line.

A bad thermocouple won't prevent the pilot from being lit, you should still be able to light the pilot, but it either wont stay lit, or will prevent the heater from running, depending how it's wired to work. Did you smell gas coming out of the pilot? Try disconnecting the line where it connects to the heater & make sure there is gas flow. Check pilot & pilot line for spiders. I can't tell you how many times I've found spiders in the pilot/line blocking the gas flow.

It can take a LONG time to bleed the air out of a line depending on how far you are from the gas tank when installing a heater like this. The hole that lets the gas come out for the pilot is TINY. We have a small wall heater that is quite a way from the tank, and when I first installed it, it took a long time to ever light the pilot for that reason. I finally proped a sack of sugar on the knob that holds it down in the 'pilot' position and walked off for a few minutes, letting it bleed out air and finally get gas.

The next time I had the line open ( to connect something else ) , I cracked the fitting open at the incoming line to the heater until I smelled gas at that point ( right at the heater ) then tightened it back, and it didn't take near as long to get the pilot back.

Propane is only under 1-2lbs of pressure in the line coming to the appliance, so it ain't exactly rushing to get there.

I'd make sure I was getting gas to the heater before worrying about repairs or replacement.

Hey Big Rockpile,

I don't know how or where the heater was stored. Maybe a spider built a web inside somewhere. I had that problem with a BBQ grill. People don't believe a spider can cut off gas flow but it happens all the time. Try running a pipe cleaner into the line. If you get any web on it that is your problem. I twisted several together end to end to get through the line. Good Luck NJ Rich
