I see them for $1.40 to $1.80 apiece, roughly - depending on the breed, and how many you want. Youmight want to ask the folks on the Homesteading poultry board about deals. And of course, go visit farms in your area and see if they'd be willing to sell.

Ideal has sex link pullets for $1.82, straight run for $1.34 and cockerels for .$79. https://secuservices.com/ideal/ (shipping charge $.12 per chick unless in Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas or Oklahoma)

$1.76 for pullets, $1.42 st. run and $.92 per cockerel at Welp http://www.welphatchery.com/egg_layer_types.asp (shipping included)

May be boxing fees if less than a certain number (1/4 box) of chicks.

May be some place cheaper, but these are a few of the more reasonably priced hatcheries.

If you were going to buy about 50---shoot you would have around $100 in them with shipping---------You can get a incubator for about $50---buy 4 dozen farm eggs from someone that has the type chickens you want--for a few bucks----A Little bit of electricity------You got some chicks cheap------re-use the incubator for years---------buy a egg turner for about $50 more---you are in business. Just My Thoughts. I have raised 100's and 100's from eggs-------Its Fun to me. Have Fun!! Randy

I want to get my flock up to higher numbers. If you have a source for eggs I will incubate them for you for a share.

Considering the time, effort, and expense involved in raising birds to point of lay the cost of the chicks is neglible. Buy the best quality chicks you can find when ever you can. You'll more than make your money back in the long run. Cheap, poor quality chicks will cost you more than the twenty five, fifty, or seventy five cents a bird you saved in buying them rather than quality stock.

Silkies are a breed of chicken and they go broody if you just look at them sideways.
