possibly relocating. . .

I suppose most of you have heard that I am looking for another position due to the lack of funding by my states non-commitment to its environmental responsibilities. Through my searches, I have found a position that is right up my alley; however, I am unaware of the lifestyle changes I will have to make. Does anyone know of the Yuma, Arizona area and how my homesteading will be affected, i.e. available land, cost of living, water, soil properties? I’ve done a search but can’t find much on property availability, the cost of living is quite decent, but if all I can purchase is 0.41 acres then I surely won’t be happy.

I think the desert type environment would be too harsh for me. Perhaps you don't have an issue with water rationing, etc.?

Try renting for awhile or house sit untill you can get a feel for the area. If in a few years you can't settle in or find a place to buy that suits you..look else where. You're not locked into one place to live or work forever ! Good Luck !!

Well, it'll certainly be environmental and culture shock...

About all I know about Yuma is that the population in Yuma Co. is freaking exploding. If you're going there, you'd better hurry. I real estate used to be pretty reasonable (10 or so years ago), I'm not sure about now. Really close to Baja!! I read an article about it a couple of years ago, and if I remember right it was listed as one of the top 5 or 10 places in the US to live. Of course the criteria used to determine that varies with the author.

That's another thing I remember about Yuma that is odd. Arid area, but no issues with water - they have water rights to the Colorado River, and although there is an allocation, they've never used it all. Now with the growth in population they are experiencing....

You should get lots of info from this website:

http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genIn...locIndex=11364

Housing info from here:

www.realtor.com

Just fill in the blanks and you'll get what info you are looking for.

Weather info from here:

http://www.wunderground.com/

If you hunt around on that one a little, you will find a place where you can get the weather for past years, as well. If you fill in certain days (pick special days, like Valentine's day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, etc. as you have to pick only one day at a time), you should be able to get a general idea what the weather is like at those times during the past several years.

Another thing you might want to consider is air-conditioning and the price of electricity out there. Personally I wouldn't even consider the place! Give me lots of green and hills!

Good luck!

Thanks, Mary! I prefer lots of green and hills also, but I must go where I can make a living. The wunderground site gave me info I hadn't even thought about, earthquakes. I don't need that; it's not as though we don't or can't get them here (New Madris Fault), I just don't want to have to deal with them on a regular basis.
