Radar Detectors

Any one have one? I am thinking of getting my DD one for christmas. She will be 21 and on her own ins.
I am not even sure if they are legal in NY, not that that will stop me. Where do I get one Ebay?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

DH and I both have radar detectors. I know they have saved us many times. It's not that we speed; it's not being glued to the change of speed signs. Here in the country the speed goes from 30 to 55 to 40 to 30 to 55 to 45 every 2 miles. Our son who does not have a RD got pulled over in this situation. Speed went from 55 to 40 to 30 in a flash. He saw the 40 slowed to 41 and got pulled over in the 30 going too fast. What a bummer. Cost him $150.00 plus time out of work.

Not exactly on the point but back before i retired i used to just giggle when i pulled someone over for speeding and there was a RD sitting on the dash! I used to tell folks to get one for the highway...they would say they are illegal and i would say...so is speeding! lol

We both have one. Worked fine in FL as the cops had their radar on all the time. Doesn't work too good in TN as the cops usually sit and wait until you just come over a hill or around a corner and then flip the radar on. They've clocked you before you even have a chance to slow down. I've driven behind cops out in Tullahoma and they turn the radar on and off even when running down a busy street.

In Florida the statute reads that an officer must perceive that you are breaking the speed limit before turning the radar on, this makes a good argument for in court sessions in that most officer do not this statute exists.

Make sure you find out whether it's legal or not in NY. Many companies won't ship to an address in a state where they're illegal.

I've had much much better luck with a CB than with a RD. Cops aren't very understanding when they pull you over and see a RD.

The best one is by Valentine One. It gives you the number of radar signals as well as the direction of their origin.

My plea to you is this; If it feels good to you to have technology beeping to warn you that the police are using radar in the area to enforce speeding regulations, then by all means buy the radar detector. Just don't use it as an excuse to speed, or to be less than vigilant concerning changes in the speed limit. In my experience they were not engineered just to catch you in violation, but are there for a legitimate purpose.

Laser has rendered them all obsolete here in Ontario.

I had one back in the "golden days" before laser. I used it to speed at will. With laser you can't do that. Laser detector exist, but only as a "you just got busted" warning. A good radar detector may save you most tickets, but if it doesn't save them all, and the one it doesn't save is a big one....

They are legal in NY unless you have a commercial Truck

Thats the current law. Just make sure you leave it at home if you drive into Quebec. They just sit above the border and look at the US plates going by with that digital readout shining over the visor. You don't have to be using it either. They confiscate it on the spot last I knew and I believe its a big fine, something like $500.

rocky mountain radar sells one that detects all radar within 6 miles and jamms all radar within 200 ft scrambling their signal it shows as no signal on their radar gun. bought mine to go to indiana when dad passed away. ran 90 all the way there n back. lotsa beeps no tickets. the pd can pace u and right u a ticket using their speedo but easy to beat in court cuz they have to show calibration within 30 days. hard to beat airplanes with the large blocks painted on the road also

There is no way I would buy one of my kids a radar detector. When they have one (especilly a young person) they think it gives them peace of mind to speed. We use to have one in our vehicle, and they do not work. I would not own one again.

I have gotten a couple tickets for speeding. I didn't have a detector when I got the tickets but they would not have helped me at all. I do know getting the tickets has slowed me down.
