Cabin Fever will be in your back yard, he should be replying to this when he sees it.

You will be living near Nimrod, of course....

It's in a beautiful part of the state. I would guess that most people who live there work in Brainerd, Walker, Detroit Lakes, Staples or Park Rapids.

Believe it or not, there is an IT outfit hiring actually IN Sebeka. It is an organization trying to leverage the lower cost of living in rural areas to keep IT jobs from going over seas. They contend that larger companies in cities can have the same cost reductions without having to outsource everything to India if they will move some of their work into rural America. It is intriguing, but it is a start up venture... Don't even know if he will get the job. If he could actually WORK in a small town that would be VERY appealing to us.

Cindyc,
I live about 12 miles from Sebeka. It's a small small town- one grocery store, one hardware store, a neat secondhand store, a bar/liquor store, two feed mills, a newspaper, a Chevy dealership and two gas stations.

To the south is Wadena with more shops, an organic feed mill, a microbusiness incubator mall, and soon to be Superwalmart.

There are lots of lakes, fishing, state forest, a good tubing river, hunting- deer limit is 5. Minneapolis/St Paul is 2 1/2 hours if you need some big city amenities. St Cloud is also getting big, 1 1/2 hours away.

Real estate can be very low- some realtors will charge much more to "people from the cities". I can recommend one good one and a bunch to stay away from.

The people can be very clannish. Sebeka/Menagha was settled by Finns from Oulu provence so they have known each other for generations. Most of them have never travelled outside the state and have a limited world view. There's no library in Sebeka.

On the other hand, most people are "homesteaders" to one degree or another and a lot of them can be helpful and generous with advice. There are some good beef herds, quite a few dairy left and a couple of goat people.

I'd be glad to answer any questions you can think up!

Yeah, what AnnaS said. You can even purchase a manufacturered home from "King of the Road" in Sebeka (we hear their ads all the time) or have one built by Verndale Homes in Verdale.

And then you can celebrate St, Urho's Day ever March too!

Thanks AnnaS and Cabin. I guess time will tell. At the moment it falls under the category of "long shot". Sounds REALLY interesting to us, tho-.
