I was called a tradding fool

I mentioned the other day that we had traded one of our meat ducks for some new hoses for our log splitter and the person laughed at me. I was kinda hurt. We are always trading around here with our friends and a neighbor. It saves money and why not, it's been done for centuries. We just traded an old lawn mower for a remote car starter (brand new). Does anyone trade or barter for homesteading stuff?

I do all the time. Let them laugh! I trade milk and cheese for whatever they have and I need. I am in the process of trading my sewing services for fabric samples from one of the best companies. I will use them to make pillows . I consign the pillows out to stores for $25 ea.

Let them laugh. They probably don't have anything worth trading anyway. I think you made a great deal.

We've traded goat milk & goat milk soap for many things.
Eggs & meat for cleaning our gutters or for barrels of wood shavings.
Traded goat breeding services.

The economy isn't going to suffer because you traded some ducks.

We barter a lot with folks.
Hey, a penny saved is a penny earned.
DH is also a pro at abscounding things for nothin', like used tin roofing, rough-cut lumber, etc. People want it gone, so DH takes it and builds something with it. I love his ways of doing that. Saves a ton of money on materials.

Around theses parts, being called a traddin' fool is a High Compliment!

As a young man I remember a neighbor who traded an Electric Generator
to my Father in exchange for a Springing Holstein Heifer. When they exchanged merchandise at the front door of our old Red Barn, They both had an air of smug satisfaction, each feeling he had bested the other.
Well, The Generator only had enough Power to run the Milk Machines OR the Milk Cooler, not the Milk Machines AND the Milk Cooler...................
And the Heifer KICKED!.........LOL.

We barter all the time. My best trade was bathing and grooming a couple of dogs in exchange for 20 bales of hay for the goats- delivered and stacked!

Next time your foolish friend does this, give them a look of incredulity and say "do you think I would be stupid enough to pay 50$ for a hose when I can get it for a $5 duck?????"

Yup. traded some lumber for a small garden tiller
traded an antique fishing reel for a 22 rifle that I use on the 'stead to kill pesky varmints
traded fishing rods for some furntiture
traded a couple of non working chain saws used for parts for a good used working chainsaw
traded a bunch of fishing tackle for a load of firewood
traded some serivces helping an old guy trimming and hauling away his tree brances for a small utility trailer

sometimes with the right 'trader' and the right 'stuff', it's mutually beneficial to trade.

You should have replied "I'm sorry, did I say something funny?" or "I'm sorry, I'm scheduled to amuse someone else & I'm running late." and turned on your heel and walked away. He was making fun of you to your face. It was insulting & rude, you should be proud to be a trader. I bet it takes him alot more $ than you to live a year, he has no idea that HE is the ignorant one!

Let 'em laugh! We trade all the time. Once traded a few bags of dog food for a used refrigerator. The guy thought he had got the better deal since the dog food retailed for around $15 a bag, but we ony had $5 in each. DH trades mowers and tools all the time and once traded a walk behind John Deere for a 4wd truck. We also got a load of free lumber just by picking up scraps and cleaning the lumberyard.

People sometimes laugh at us too, but I guess they just have a neverending supply of money and can afford to buy everything.

Now if I could just get the utility companies to barter

Maggie

Maggie If you can figure this out I'll find something to trade you for the information.

We always trade and we are quite Happy when we can. And anyone else needing something around here comes to see If we have it before they buy it because they know they can trade us for it.

We don't homestead yet, but we barter alot. I don't have to pay my vet bills or dental deductibles because we barter our computer consulting for them. I trade stuff all the time. I traded my extra copies of old Mother Earth News mags for some herbs. I think you are very smart!

The value in a good trade is when both parties get what they want and are both happy about it.
