Truck mounted hydraulic bale carrier trouble

I have a truck mounted with a 2 prong spear off the back for spiking round bales and picking them up and moving them to the cows. Must be about 8 or 9 years old. My hydraulics are messing up, it won't change directions on the motor to let it lower down the bale. It is pressure up and down. (2 way cylinder).

It is a "Haldex 12 Volt DC Hydraulic Power Unit, Model# 1510027" well not exactly but that is the replacement for what I have. Trouble is the unit is almost 500 dollars!

Ok guys and gals where do I look for parts Northern Tool carries them.......that is where I found it. I don't think pump is bad just the valve. Electric magnet thing..... for a better word it just hangs.

I have took apart and cleaned nothing is rusty... clean oil (atf)

Anyone had any trouble with something like this or know where I should be looking or posting????

HELP

I know what you are talking about, but have no experience with those units.

www.ytmag.com is hobby folks with old farm machines & real helpful mechanically minded people.

http://talk.newagtalk.com is more current farmers with more current machines & helpful minded people. Few hay producers there.

Doesn't this unit have a switch and a cord and solenoids to control the functions? The Dc motor does not reverse IMO. The direction is changed by the solenoid valves controlled by the switches connected to the cord. You need to determine if the coils on the solenoid valves are receiving power when attempting to change movement. Simple things like a broken wire/solder joint or a dirty switch or a burned out coil on a solenoid can cause the problem you are experiencing. Can you post a schematic of the circuits?

valve

My guess is that the valve is simply not redirecting the flow to the proper side of the cylinder.

If worse comes to worse simply put on a hand valve to redirect the flow. Cheaper but not nearly as convenient.

I agree it is not changing the flow....have rebuilt the dc motor 2x it has moved alot of hay. Don't want to get out to change the valve on cold rainy days! feed too many bales for that.

More

Nothing worse than a cold wet rain so I fully understand where you are coming from.

Is there anyway to check the magnetic properties, i.e. strength of the coils around the spools? If the pull is weak it may allow for the non-moving valve.
Expect a coil is $20-$25, might even pay to chance replacing them to see if that is the trouble. Anyone with a similar unit that would let you put their coils on your unit?

As an alternative you can check into the valve units on Gleaner L series combines. They used electro-magnetic valves to control flow. Not sure any of them were two way though. Just a thought.

The DC motor and the pump are like the ones used on hydraulic tailgates on large trucks. These things have almost no value at truck salvage yards.

I have a similar unit from HydraLine (Triple C Manufacturing, Sebetha, KS - 785-284-3674 or 800-530-5624 - www.triple-c-inc.com). My unit has the push/pull knobs. A couple of years later they switched to an electric motor. Even if you don't have one of their units give them a call. Have always been extremely helpful when I have spoken with them.
