Homesteading what does it make you think of?

When I think of Homesteading I think of a neighbor I had as a child. He had a simple home,a big old root celler made of rock. There were apples, pears, peaches and nut trees. He had what seemed to me to be an edible yard with strawberrys, blackberrys, rasberrys, blueberrys and even tea berrys. There was his big old barn and pasture for his work horse and cows.He had a huge garden spot he would sit me on his workhorse while he plowed his garden I was convinced that it was the biggest horse in the world but he was so gentle. He had an old willys jeep and if the winter was bad he would be the only one going anywhere He always checked on us to see if we needed anything from town.

What a great memory Wildhorse. What a great neighbor too - offering help to his neighbors. And he sounds like a gentle soul.

To me, a homestead is as you described. A plot of land, filled with fruit trees, bushes, nut trees, enough space for good sized garden, pasture, plenty of trees for firewood, animals to help sustain those living there, and hopefully a well.

I think of my grandparents who came up from KY in 1930-31, and built from scratch everything and every building they had in Northern Wis. What a differnt world from the one they grew up in. They collected chickens, geese, horses to plow with and slowly got up to around 35 Jersey and Gurnsey milk cows by the 1950's. I have the rolling pin and the potato masher granddad carved by hand for my grandma and I use them with love and many memories.
