Worms in Chestnuts

We have seven Chinese or Chinese American cross chestnut trees in our yard in north Georgia and hundreds of chestnut burrs fall each year but there full of worms even before they hit the ground . Does anyone know how to stop the worms? We would love to eat or sell these chestnuts. Any advise would be greatly apprieciated (SP).

You stop them by running poultry under the trees! The birds will break the cycle of insect transmission, by eating worms as they leave the burrs (adult turkeys will also eat the whole chestnuts, if not too large). This kills them before they mature & fly up into the branches to lay another generation of eggs.

This also works with apple trees & the like.

Exclamation

You need to check and then DOUBLE-CHECK to make sure before ingesting them.......better to give the worms a tummy ache than to have your stomach pumped. There was a thread on this same subject earlier last week; check it out, as it had some good information. http://homesteadingtoday.com/showthr...ight=chestnuts
