over head traffic

hows your area for things flying over your space? when we moved here the air was filled with large commercial jets and military craft, since they redid the air port and rerouted these, the air has seen the occasional fly over but mostly small craft and helocopters. we also had a neighbour in the airforce came home in a chopper some times! then there were the balloons! real preaty but scared the sheep and horses as they had too land before they hit the forest preserve near us. our fields are too small and have large trees growing in the fence rows so they tended too land in our neighbours400 acre + field till the day they landed in half an inch of liquid manure!!! they tend not too fly over any more!! oh and retired pilot? he's got him self an ultralite!

We get presidential and white house vip traffic only over top of us. 3-4 choppers in a formation - GW. one chopper - staff or guest. They make a heck of a racket. Other than those, I don't think I have seen another plane or helicopter in our airspace.

The best fly over we had was the helicoptor that had this big 40+ foot chainsaw blade thing hanging from it. They use it every few years to trim tree branches along the cleared area for the high power lines.

The thing looked and sounded like SHTF*1000. We were out walking our week old calf the first time it came over. The power company folks saw us and called off the helicopter while they came by to let us know what was going on. They were very pleasant and even did a nice clean up job afterwards - but it sure was a surprise for us!

Here's a photo of what one of those things looks like: http://www.bemc.org/nov2002.htm

We have a fair number of small planes going over, and every so often a line of HUGE military choppers.

One place I lived in CO was constantly being checked out by low flying 'black' choppers. There were constant rumors of meth labs and 'weed' growers in the area, but given the lack of water, I tended to think it was just rumor. We hauled water 9 miles over some rough roads and the folks beyond us had to haul it even further.

We live over ten miles from any small town at all. The nearest one has about 2,000 people. We moved way out here on purpose. We are two miles at least from the highway. We live 100 miles from both Abilene and Fort Worth.

Well, nearly EVERY afternoon, the Air Force jets circle over our place practicing dogfighting. This is VERY loud - much louder than a mere backhoe. All that roaring overhead for hours... even with the house closed up and the air conditioner on, we can still hear them. Well, who do you complain to about that? Not only that, they are breaking the sound barrier on occasion as well, which I believe was outlawed...

My dad is retired Air Force. I grew up on Air Force bases. I never minded the sounds of the jets there, it's expected. Not only that, I love the Air Force Thunderbird shows. But I DON'T love it overhead, nearly every day, especially when I moved out in the middle of nowhere specifically for the country quiet!

And people tell me I should be grateful... etc.

Pretty well everything flying in or out of CFB Trenton comes over our heads at some point, including all of the flights of dead soldiers from Afghanistan, including another one coming in this afternoon. We're also along a ridge they use for a landmark so they tend to fly a lot of Hercules and SAR helicopter training missions along it fairly low. It only really gets noisy when one of the big Ukrainian Antonovs is coming in or out to take heavy equipment to Afghanistan or elsewhere, those things sound like a freight train going past about 20' away.

Geese, ducks and on occassion hugh flocks of red winded blackbirds; that's the majority of what flies over here.
We do get a couple of army planes flying over once a week and the Medi-vac for emergencies. Hot air ballons about once a month - doen't scare the horses a bit actually they follow the balloon as far as the pasture will allow.

I have a neighbor who has a helicopter(he's a fire guy), he likes to come up and over the ridge behind our house and buzz along the trees to his house. Scared me to death the first time, but now I now it's him it's fun. The forestry fire spotters fly over/circle during summer.

There is a airline "road" above us n/s, but they are at altitude--on a clear day it is so quite here you can hear them (30,000'!).

In August there is an antique fly-in show in McMinnville, and there are some MIG and other old fighter jets and bi=planes that buzz our hills. Once I watched a biplane circle and dive above a "kettle" of soaring turkey vultures--quite a sight!

We get a fair amount of traffic over our house. It is better than living a couple of blocks from the fire and police stations. No major military manuvers though so that makes a difference.

When looking for property if that is a concern for someone they can buy a general aviation map and see where the military airspace is. Then check what it is used for to see if it would be an issue. Some is for high speed stuff...and some is for no snooping.

We used to live near an airbase that had A10 Warthogs stationed, and they practiced flying as low as possible, following the changes in elevation of the hills, directly over our place, sometimes many times a day. Helicopters used the same routes to practice too.

We moved.

We get a fair amount of air traffic overhead, due to a small airport about 10 miles due south (private jets especially), and a hospital with a heliport about 6 blocks away. We get lots of traffic from DFW from traffic headed to and from the northeast. But by far the coolest thing I ever saw related to air traffic, was the space shuttle coming in for a landing (in Florida) at night as it crossed over Texas. A fast-moving flaming streak across the night sky.

We also heard and felt the tragedy of the Columbia first hand, unfortunately.

We are near the border so we get homeland security choppers on occasion. Also private small planes and ultralights. Other than that, it's pretty much canada geese.

Occasionally military jets from Wright-Patt AFB. Often, very cool looking airplanes, including bi-planes, from the small local airport. Hey, I'm near Dayton. The whole flight thing is big here.

We get choppers looking for pot plants this time of year, rest of the time it is jets practicing dog fights from the air base 60 miles away. No big deal. Daryll in NW FLA

Aaaah!- the sound of freedom! We have army helo pilot trainees and probably a neighbor or two checking on the homespread flying over M-F no earlier than 0700 and no lower than nap of the earth.

On the Texas Gulf Coast where I live most of the time, we don't have much major air traffic, but my son is in the Navy, and when he was doing his fixed wing training at Corpus, he was able to fly over the house and circle around a couple of times. I stood in the Farm-to-Market Road in front of my house and cried with joy and did a happy dance. It was sooooooooooooooo wonderful. He's now a helo pilot, but he hasn't brought one home yet. :baby04:

Up in Missouri, we're close enough to the Air Force base in Arkansas to have the jets flying practice dog fights high up above the forest. As mentioned before, the sound of freedom.

Used to live under the flight path for the OLF on Whidbey - one of my co-workers husband was a pilot and was doing practice bounces on his birthday. We climbed up on my roof and put up a big happy birthday sign for him. His whole squad got a kick out of that. I got quickly got used to the frequent sound of jet traffic and it never really bothered me.

We live about 3 miles from a small muni airport - probably hear a light plane once a week during the summer. Get a lot more noise from the dirt race track that is across from the airport - boy are those race cars LOUD! In fact I find the sound of the races much more annoying than I ever did listening to "the noisest jets the Navy has." (And they used to fly low enough to shake stuff off my bookshelves!)

We are near a small private airport with hangars for rent. There are a few different companies there that give lessons, offer flightseeing and do 'chute jumping. We are in the flight path for some of that stuff. The only real annoyance I experience is when the folks getting lessons do the shut-off-the-engine-and-coast-then-start-the-engine-up-again thingy right overhead. Pretty startling sometimes. The other day we had a copter staring down at us for several minutes from several different angles. Loud and obnoxious but no more so than the kids with the dirt bikes that tear up the road for hours on end.

A hot air balloon wafted by just above the treetops a few weeks ago. That was novel! The horses stood transfixed.
