What kind of spider is this?
We have these everywhere right now. What is it? It's huge! I have a picture of his belly too if that helps. We live in the Pacific Northwest.

It's what we call a "writing spider"around here.It's harmless,and a great protector of your garden.They get huge,but make great neighbors.

I'm pretty sure it is a Garden Spider. I used to mow some cemetaries and one would have those every year, alllll along the peremeter fence, going from the top to the ground. The front of my mower would get covered with webs. I tried spinning it into string, and it makes a very nice and very strong string.

we call it a writing spider here abouts too. (see that zigzag in her web?) The kids used to catch small crickets and throw them on a writing spider web to 'feed' their pets. goofy kids!

Big, scary, and harmless.
They're pretty so long as you don't walk through their web and notice them only when the spider runs across your face in a panic trying to get away.

we call em barn widows here, harmless but eat lots of flies. I don't know why they are called that here . must be their nick name

I get them in my yard, particularly around my berry bushes and daylilies.
Pretty, isn't it?

Yes that is a garden spider. If you pay attention to them, the mom will hang there until she has laid her eggs. Once she is done - she just drops off and dies. I had on outside a kitchen window last year. It took several weeks before she dropped off. Each of them also builds that unique bold zigzag

Thank you so much everyone! They are really the prettiest spiders I've seen around here. Glad to know it is harmless and I'll definetly have to tell the kids it's Charlotte from Charlottes web! I did wonder at that zig zag in her web. We must of had some hatch because they are just everywhere around here right now. They are kinda of big though!

Yep, Garden spiders. I don't like spiders but those are fine and dandy. I was taught from a very early age not to hurt these spiders because they are a good friend. I also don't hurt granddaddy longlegs. The rest are "targets".

for those of us without a black light handy.... what does it do???
i think it's a hoot how they bounce up and down in their web when they feel threatened.
normally i am more afraid of spiders than snakes, but i kind of like these guys. as long as they aren't ON me.

Yeah... *shudder*... pretty. It's funny though how some spiders can almost sway an arachnophobic (that would be me, but the word doesn't quite cover the extent of my fear of spiders). "Josephine" is living at the edge of the counter top in the kitchen, a little cutie in a sick sort of way, and I talk to her and have tossed swatted flies in her web  And today, while watering the flowerbed out back, I hosed down a few torn webs as usual and then apologized profusely to what's to my eyes a HUGE spider with a new web from the hosta to the hollyhock. Because I almost hosed down her web too. Until she scrambled up a thread to safety from the flood and I saw that the web is inhabited. And no, I don't know what kind of spider it is or what it looks like - I'd have a heart attack if I looked at one that big. Didn't catch any glimpse of black and yellow though.
I worry about me... it's ok to be a sucker for stray cats and dogs, you get used to it and just meekly give in at some point, but being a sucker for a spider?? Good grief.
So anyway... enjoy the little huge darlings, Morningstar
