Cast Iron kerosene pot thingie

Does anyone use the little kerosene pot with the ceramic ball on a stick for fire starting?
Does it do the job all by itself? Can you use larger diameter kindling and still have it catch?

I have one, although it is different than the Leman's model. I misplaced the little ceramic do-hicky but still have the pot. It worked very well. The ceramic thingy soaks up a great deal of kerosene and will burn for a good period of time, about 10 min. if I remember correctly. I didn't pay anywhere near $30 for it. Leman's is VERY expensive. Take a look at what they want for canning jars.

Edited to add: My pot is made of pottery. That's probably why I paid less.

We used to use lamp oil to start the fire. After going through the second bottle realized just how expensive that can be so switched to newspaper and small kindling. I get a fire started quicker and hotter now and use the old papers up in the process. Heres my tip. I collect old buildings, barns specifically. I reuse the lumber to build on our place, but always have a lot of scrap wood that is left over. It's old, seasoned, and hardwood (oak, poplar, locust). I cut to length on my miter saw, split with a hatchet, and stack it like pixie sticks in an old dynamite box. That old lumber splits WAY easier than firewood. 3-4 sheet of rolled newspaper, a dozen barnwood sticks, and the blaze is on.

We just got a Lehman's catalog in the mail a couple days ago, and I showed that ceramic thing to my DW. I had never seen one before.

Think that a metal oil squirt can filled with kerosene would just as well. Wad up some newspaper, a little kindling and a few squirts of kerosene and everything should light fine.
