What is the second best rat bait?

It seems peanut butter is not working in the trap.

Apples work well, and try a little vanilla to mask your scent.

I used dog biscuits dipped in bacon grease. Used a fine wire to hold them on the trap.

bacon works well in cold or hot weather - tie to the trigger. Also caramel candies work.

Prebait traps - put the bait on the traps for a couple of days, don't set the traps. After the rats start coming to take the bait, set the traps. Rats are smart - if a trap goes off and spooks them, it, may be a while before they try again.

I see you want it for a trap, but if you really want to get rid of the buggers, Jaguar rat poison works great. They just eat Dcon like candy around here.

We talking rat or mice??I know here everything is a rat from 1 inch to 12.For real rats we use a galvanized trash can pushed up against something that allows them to climb over to it and get in but they can't get out and put bait in the bottom.Same type thing works for mice but does not have to be so big.

I've found that "lead" from a .410 or similar caliber works VERY WELL! No need to bait a messy trap either.

Moop,
I'll second the cream cheese. Peanut butter always seemed to work the best for me, but I have had times when they seemed " finicky !" I never use poison, because I am like you, too many other good " critters" around.

Those rats do get wise to a trap after awhile I would try a 5 gallon bucket with paper taped on and and twop slit scut across it with a little food on it placed where they can climb on to it. Or I use canned mackeral at my place still have rats/mice I kill them and 10 come in taking their places

A friend of mine swears by raisins or fresh diced pears she uses tiny rubber bands to hold the pears in place. Seems to work for her

If you are just wanting them dead, put out a bowl of beer or pop of any kind. Rodents can't belch. They drink and go off and die. If you want to trap them, I would use bacon.
