Converting old bathtubs...
There are two old enameled iron bathtubs at my Daddy's sawmill. I told hubby today that I was going to put one in the backyard next to the well spigot. We had more than a pallet of bricks left over from building our house so my plan is to brick the tub in with a drainpipe in the bottom. We can use to bathe the dogs or as a watering trough for the dogs...or both!
The other one I was going to put in the barnlot for the horses, but I will probably build a wood frame and trim in out in leftover pine boards, then paint red to match the barn.
Hubby thinks its a silly idea and that the tubs will look ugly. I think they'll be nice and look nice...not that anyone can see them in our backyard and barnlot!!!
Will it work? Can I use Quickrete as mortar?

Those tubs can be worth a lot of money == before I ruined them I would check -- I stopped at a little place in TN that redoes them, then sells them for 750 on up to a couple thousand. If the are real long or short or if they have the original legs you might want to try to sell em!

Dittos on the re-sale value...
I just want to second the suggestion above...Look at ebay and see what they are bringing. We put an old claw foot enamelled tub in out NEW HOUSE!
Paid $425.00 on ebay for it and the fixtures...then drove 200 miles to pick it up...
Won't cost ya anything to check on ebay, and it might be worth your while...

These aren't clawfoot bathtubs.

I brought one home a few years ago to use as a water trough for the horses, but it is in the backyard as a water garden and humongous goldfish swimming in it. The plants and fish got put there from the other garden pond to protect them from the ducks and geese.
If I can find a PINK tub, it will go in the front yard for a flamingo garden, tasteful, yet tacky.

tubs make great water troths Id leave some of the drain in tact and run a length of pipe away . the drain sure makes cleaning them alot easier .
quickcrete should make a fine base for one .

There probably isn't one farm around here that doesn't use one or two of those old bathtubs as water troughs for their animals. On one farm we counted 14 of them! Need a few myself for watering stock, for ponds in the organic vegie garden, for hydroponic tanks, and for raising worms, but they're becoming harder and harder to find.

Use 2 of them and make a BBQ pit that will last you the rest of your life. I've had mine almost 40 years and it looks like it did the day I got it.

Quikrete
Which variety of Quikrete product are you asking about? They make quite a few.
The regular concrete mix has too coarse of an aggreate mixed in to use for mortar. Quickrete does make a mortar mix which would work just as it should.

Ok pictures please! I'm having a hard time envisioning this.
My mom has always used them for horse watering troughs.I don't think they look to bad.

A buddy from work built an insulated cedar box around an old tub he placed on his patio. He added a lid and plumbed the drain out of the box and into the yard, He now has the biggest ---- beer cooler you ever saw. From the side it looks like a hot tub. I don't see why using the tub as a tub wouldn't look or work just as good. Go for it.

Old tubs are great finds. We have three we use for animal feeders/waterers. I'd take more if I could find them. I'm always keeping my eyes open.
