Emergency Food

I was at Costco today and they had this bucket for $110

http://nutristorage.com/products

Is it worth it to buy something like this? Or are you better off just putting together something yourself with canned items?

We actually don't eat a lot of canned food and the things I would be buying for our "emergency" food would be food I probably wouldn't eat unless it WAS an emergency (i.e. top ramen or powdered potatoes).

Thanks for your thoughts!

It appears to be *vegetarian*, which is pretty darn cool!

Which section of costco? By the Ramen, the Sugar, the Nuts....

Check out serving sizes... 275 servings out of a five gallon bucket seems a little sparce, but that could be because it's all dry too.

Nice thing is, you buy and forget it, nothing to go bad really.

We bought one of the emergency storage food deals years ago. Packed in nitrogen, etc., expected shelf life of ten years. Wound up using all of it for compost after 15 years. It smelled awful.

Just stock your kitchen well with things you actually use. Make sure you rotate your stock, using the older stuff first.

My general rule of thumb is , store what you eat and eat what you store.
I stopped buying the food we dont like but I stocked for the sake of emergency. It doesnt do me any good to stock it knowing I won't eat it willingly unless I have a stash intended to give away(family, food bank, church, etc) So if you're going to buy stuff like this, (it really is a great idea) rotate it into your food plan so you have a good variety and know what you're in for if you ever have to rely on it completely.

Compared to the prices on the emergency preparedness sites, it looks like a pretty good deal - if you will eat it. If they are foods you like (you can look at the ingredients on the site you linked to), then put them into your food plan and use them within a few years. Sometimes I will buy bulk packaged stuff knowing that we won't eat some of it, but we usually clean our cabinets out 2x per year and take the sealed things to the homeless center - they love it.
