Retail cuts of meat

Is there a difference in the cuts of meat from my cow/pig that I get processed for my home vs. at the store? Just wondering.

The names of the cuts are different. At the store the concern is marketing so they use appealing new names for the same old cuts. When I purchased sides of beef cut, wrapped and frozen the cuts seemed to be about the same as at the store but packages were identified with non-fancy names.

Usually the processor will ask you how you want it cut. That's your chance to get what you want. They ought to be able to explain what all the cuts are, as some are mutually exclusive.

you need to tell the butcher what cuts you like, for example you can't have ribeye steaks and T bone steak, they are from the same area of the cow. You can't get a pork loin and pork chops again same area of pig.

Hope this helps
