Is it legal for law enforcemen officers to park on private property to
Is it legal for law enforcement officers to set up on private property to catch speeders? They hide in driveways to catch speeders on the highway and also park on plant parking lots to catch speeders on the highway. When we asked them to set up in our town they said there was no place to hide, we said how about here, they said they cannot do it because it was on private property. Does any one know if it is legal to set up on your driveway to catch speeders?

I sure as heck wouldn't let them on my property to enforce their "cashier" laws.

Ya beat me to it CH51..NO way is any cop gonna get that kind of help from me.....
I don't think it's legal for cops to HIDE ANYwhere....to find speeders.....it used to not be anyway...my mom got a ticket from a cop that was hiding...and boy, she read him the riot act when went and paid it....... :baby04:

That would be a pretty fast gate I'd erect.

It's legal if the property owners allow it...otherwise it's trespassing. A lot of cops don't ask for permission, but some do and many homeowners grant them permission because they don't like people driving real fast by their house. Also, if you let them park in your driveway, they'll remember it if you ever need a favor from them. For those of you who think it's wrong for cops to hide, that's assinine. The speed limit applies ALL the time, not just when cops are there or when you know they're there. If you don't want a speeding ticket, don't speed. Simple enough....

Who says they need to hide to catch people? When we lived in the downtown area a cop was parked in front of my house with his lights on and caught 4 people in 30 min.

Yeah, and we all KNOW that all cops only arrest/write a ticket to those that are doing wrong....like they never make a mistake, omnipotent little buggers those cops....................... I guess I've seen my family burned by cops a few times too many....like the time my second oldest brother got the living crap beat out of him in my mothers front yard[where he was living at the time]...but yeah, I guess being out late, jamming with your buds, is enough of a reason to beat someone up........ :baby04: This cop split my brothers head open with his club, and of the six of us kids, he's the most non violent of all of us....wouldn't even spank his two kids..............and there are many, many other stories like that......BTW-I don't USUALLY speed, and I say usually, because EVERYONE breaks a law sometimes....there are just too dang many of em, for anyone to be a completely law abiding person anymore...................and I live in the land of small-town-speed-trap-heaven.........so yeah, I'm with bcr....it'd be a large gate that I'd build........................very quickly...........

they can use my driveway any day. I live on a blind s curve. I'm resigned to having people take my trash cans out because they can't correct in time, but someday it's going to be my car - or a person at my mailbox. Any police officer who's willing to risk his or her life by parking at the end of my drive for an extended period of time has my blessing!
(maybe if someone hit a police car the limit would get lowered even? or a speed bump. I'd like a nice asphalt speed bump. the big brown temporary ones people keep laying out smell bad and dissapear too fast....)

I called an asked the same question here. I live at the very end of a horseshoe shaped road. My neighbor has a blind son, and so the "loop" of our road (where I live" has special signs saying 10mph.. Blind child at play.
well.. NOONE goes 10mph. there isn't much traffic on our road, but the few we get fly!! After my kids got run int the ditch by one of these idiots, I called and asked if they would come out for a day to show that it was being watched, they said nope, They couldnt cause its private prop. and I could do a citizens arrest if they were going over 10mph lol
Right.. I'll make it down my long driveway and be able to run em down in time! then wait the 30 min if I'm lucky for a officer to come finish the paperwork lol
good grief.
I just thank God the blind child wasnt the one in the street that day.

I imagine, like everything else, it depends on what the law is in your state. Here the police can set up on private property if they have the owners permission.
If you have a serious speeding problem in your area and you want the police to give it some attention, don't be rebuffed by a single call to the station. That officer or dispatcher may have been up to his/her ears in other things which he (or his superiors) thought to be more important than your speeding issue; and thus may have come up with the 'cannot do it on private property' answer.
Now this may or may not be the truth of the matter, but if I really wanted the problem addressed I would take it one or two steps higher, maybe even to the chief of police if this is a small town and you can gain an audience.

I wish they'd come sit in my driveway. The speed limit is 15 mph because the road runs through the woods and has bad corners you can see the end of. People fly by here daily. There's no need to hide in my driveway. They could sit at the edge with the lights flashing and not be seen through the trees until they're 20' from the drive.
True story - I ticked off a deputy. He flew into the school parking lot in his private vehicle while I was loading Girl Scouts onto the bus for a field trip. I yelled at him to slow down. Small town - he knew who I was. A few weeks later DD is driving my car. He thinks it's me and he's going to get even with me. He pulls her over and after a lot of harsh talk, he writes her up for running a stop sign - but she's on the main road and there hasn't been a stop sign for almost 20 miles. DD was very quiet and wouldn't stand up to authority at the time (she's not like that now). She came home sobbing and showed me the ticket. It says that she is 120 pounds tall and weighs 5' 6". She has blue hair and blonde eyes. He didn't do the math correctly and had her age wrong. She was going to pay the ticket and be done with it. I, on the other hand, would have no such thing. She hadn't had her license a year. I wasn't letting her lose it because of the jerk. She went to court. He didn't show up. He didn't even turn in a report. Before the first case was called the prosecutor asked the judge to dismiss her case because the evidence didn't warrant it even being on the docket.
Lumping all cops in one group as jerks is ignorance. There a lot of good ones. They're no fun to gripe about though.

I've had police ask to use my driveway..no problem..you'd think that road we lived on was a Nascar speedway. I was thrilled to have them try to slow those idiots down...

i live on moderately sharp curve wit ha barn close to the road. the police used to take advantage of the cover and hide there. when i was about ten to twelve years old, i told the local cop to leave as he had no permission to be there. he grumbled and tried to intimidate me but i held my ground and he left.
i was always under the impression that police needed to be in plain sight or it was considered entrapment.

Frankly, I think they hide so they can sit there reading the paper....
This is a particular peeve for me. I can't understand why they spend so much time and effort to enforce the speeding laws, and yet drive right by when some idjut is 2 inches off my tail lights.
Or when some maniac with road rage is cutting people off left and right....
I think they need to get there butts out on the roads to enforce all the other
safe driving laws for a change.

I don't understand why they think its beneficial to hide! If they'd stay out in the open more often..more people would slow down.
The hiding is sneaky..and serves no purpose except to punish people. It doesn't slow anybody down..just makes them mad at cops.
