Just closed on my first house!
I just got back from the title agency, just closed on my first house. It's a 2 bed, 1.5 bath ranch, with a unfinished upstairs that I'll eventually make into a master, bath, and nursery/den. 2.5 car garage. Located on a nice street in a good suburban area. First project will be removing the awnings and painting the outside. As you can see it is a suburban house, unfortunately my job is in the city and I don't have means to start 'really' homesteading yet, but I will be installing a wood stove for heat, based on advice I have read here.
Anyway here's a pic:

Awesome! It's a great feeling - I bought my first homestead (all 0.25 acres) last summer. It looks quite a bit like yours. Got the garden and flowers in. It's a lot of fun, I never thought I'd spend so much time thinking about concrete paint or gutters...
Enjoy!

What a nice looking house. You now have some land, even if only for a few tomato plants - everyone has to start somewhere.
Congratulations.

Way to go!!
The nice thing is that you can make mistakes on this house and then take your new knowledge with you to your next home
Removing our awnings made a huge difference in the amount of light that was let in and also updated the house a bit.

I see grass, where there's grass there's dirt, where there's dirt, there's all kinds of possibilities!
In a few years after you are where you need to be financially and mentally you can sell this little house in the burbs to a nice young couple looking to move up from a small apartment. They will be grateful for all the work you've done to it and the garden spot you left behind.

Home ownership is a great achievement and says a lot about a person's commitment to success and peace of mind. I envy the feelings that you must be experiencing. It is a nice house and I know you will make it a great home!
PS..... It is a Cape Cod, isn't it?

I guess you could call it a cape cod or a bungalow, right now the upstairs is just attic but it's tall enough and clear span so eventually I plan to finish it into a master bedroom, as the downstairs master is a little on the small side. If I put a couple dormers on the front, and finish the upstairs, then I'd call it a cape cod for sure.
Leaving the title company this afternoon I felt like a million bucks and just could not stop smiling, people in the lobby were looking at me funny. I'm so excited, I get posession on tuesday, can't wait.

Congratulations! What a cute house. It looks a lot like the house I grew up in, complete with the aluminum awnings. Where in Ohio are you?

Congrats!! You bought an adorable house. Don't let your suburban location fool you. I've been living on a 1/4 acre lot since 1987 - we can't have critters but I have an herb bed and our vegetable garden gives us all of the peas, green beans, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage and potatoes we need.
We bought 10 acres of land in '01 and got it paid for. Now we will use the equity that we have in our current house to build our log cabin. It took a long time. But if we had been putting our money into rent for the past 19 years instead of into a mortgage, we would never be able to finally afford our dream home.

Congratulations! What a big step, and 100% a positive step.
You might leave those awnings on until you see how much sun (and heat) they block in the dog days of summer.
Looks like a great house.

Looks like good sunlight. I'd get trellises going all around that house and grow some FOOD (while shading the windows from sun and cooling the home naturally.) Is there a basement? How big is the lot? I'd put in some dwarf fruit trees ASAP.
