What is this?

seen one of these yesterday while walking in a field... Anyone know what it is?
Looks sorta like a cross between a crawdad, humminbird, and bee

I believe it is a hummingbird moth. Did you see it in the late evening?

Well, I can see the bee and the hummingbird, but crawdad? LOL!
It's some kind of moth -- I think there's one called a hummingbird moth. Possibly that's what you saw?
Adding -- Yup! I did a Google search, and that's what it is! Neat!

thanks folks.
The tail is what reminded me of a crawdad
saw it in the morning (10ish) eating from a thistle (got to get those out of the pasture)..
I can't take credit for the picture. I found it on the net but it didn't have a name of what it was. LOL
Hope to see more of these. Their pretty cool. On second though maybe not. I guess their larve stage is hornworm..

That is really neat! If you happen to find one that has given up the ghost, let me know...I'll pay for shipping out here. My son collects cool dead bugs and we definately don't have one of those!

We have those here too ! My husband saw one and thought it was a hummingbird till he got a closer look . We have seen a few . I thought they were ugly - lol.

Kind of reminds me of my second girlfriend--beady eyes,big nose,spindley legs,and big behind. Still kind of pretty-unless you look closely.

Aren't those the coolest things?!?!
I saw one a couple of years ago and when I told my DH about it, he didn't believe me  !
The one I saw here though didn't have transparent wings, it's wings looked more hummer like, and it's body looked more "feathered" with bumble bee striping, and it's antenae looked well, like, TV antenae (sort of). So I called it a Bumble Bird.
It really liked my Phlox!

It reminds me of something out of a Steven King story.
I think it was in the Bachmann book, was it called the "Arrowhead Project"?
Looks like a flying lobster!

I haven't read that one.. I'm a big SK fan.. Well was.. I haven't read anything since I finished the final dark tower book.. I won't spoil it other than to say don't get too excited.. Think about Ka
But I'll probally get back to reading his stuff again. He's always been my fav fiction author.

Well can you tell me what kind of bug this is? My husband and I where setting on the porch and this come flying in . Hitting my husband on the arm and startleing him so bad he smached it and kill. But you can see the body stayed in one piece.
