My buddy is back (Picture) Trying picture again.
You get used to having some friends around. This one is back for his third year.
This is my first trying a picture. Gary

Why thats a certified poultry population controller. If you got poultry, they'll keep your egg production down, chick population under control, and will eradicate any banny chickens you might have available...

As Texican said he is a certified poultry population controller or chicken snake. He is between 51/2 & 6 feet long. I ran my hand into one of my nesting boxes and he's what I pulled out. He seems to have a pretty nice disposition. He's not to bad on my eggs but he is heck on my mouse population so that's the reason I put up with him. Gary

I'm also one who is willing to pay for rodent control with a few eggs. There's a lovely huge black racer that lives here, as well as several corn snakes of a rich orange color phase. So far, they've not taken their pay in chicks, and if they're taking eggs, it's not so I'd notice. But I've only seen one mouse in the three years we've been here! And that stupid thing was trying to live under the feeder in the chicken house. It didn't last long when I picked up the feeder!

Have I ever told you that I refused a wedding gift of 16acres of land in Virginia??
My husband grew up there and his family was very generous....problem being I told him if I ever saw a big snake I would pack and leave him alone in VA. I've come to tolerate the nice little snakes here in Maine....and no surprises in the fricken chicken coop
I've heard that Alaska and possibly Hawaii? are snake free  Hawaii has nasty lizards though

Thanks for sharing Gary.
It is because of a rat/chicken snake that we have our 4th dog...long story short. When our resident rat snake got to where he helped himself to one too many guinea keats he had to be relocated...he too had been around for a few years...the dog was a drop off at the relocation place needing a new home.

Nice picture!!!! You did a good job. Lovely snake too. Re banties and snakes fighting...snakes usually hunt at night and the chickens don't even move.
I am with you guys and rodent control..how many snakes a year injure or kill people? How many deaths from rodents? No contest...I'll take the snake every time! 
I hope you take more photos at your place.

I found one of those last week in my chicken coop. He had just eaten an egg and was interrupted before he got to eat any more. I make sure I look now before sticking my hand in to get eggs! I don't mind sharing a few.

Great photo! How do you recognize him from year to year? Here's a picture of the rat snake hubby found in our duck nest (look close and you can see two eggs in his belly):
Mr. Rat Snake was relocated to the woods and hasn't been spotted at the chicken pen since (not that he hasn't made his way back!).
A few days ago I went in the downstairs bathroom and there was a turtle (terrapin) in the shower. Hubby told me to take a look and sure enough, it was Repeat. Last year the dogs brought Repeat to the house four or five times. We weren't sure if we'd see him again this year, but he's obviously still around. He has a healed broken place on the top of his shell making him easily recognizable.
