Picture Update (warning 400k of pictures)

I took some pictures recently of some projects I have in progress and updates at our place for use in my blog and thought that the folks here (who always seem to like pictures) might like to see them as well. I don't have anything grand to say about most of these so they don't really deserve a thread of thier own. If you have questions about any in particular I'll certainly answer otherwise, enjoy.

First up is a pic of my (now) fully grown muscovy hens. Pretty self explanitory here...

and one of them with our first hatchling (about 4 days ago) We currently have two broody so there should be plenty of lil ones running around soon

Keeping with the bird theme here is our quickly growing auracana/Ameraucana roo to go with our set of the same we got in a local trade last year...

and a shot of our quickly developing cochins... led by a very nice blue

while not birds themselves, this is the begining of my new bird enclosure. I've been struggling to figure out what I need to keep my growing birds in place now that they are able to fly quite well and fencing being what it is I struck on the idea of using the available bamboo in the back of my property. I've gathered nearly 600 staves now, (a bit over half that I need) and planned on having it completed by next weekend. However, the untimely breaking of my left big toe will put that off a bit longer but I've already made a lot of progress from here.

Since it's made from bamboo sourced on the property and collected twine from the bales the total cost of the fence will be nadda... which is my favorite price of all.

And the catalyst for my broken toe were these guys...

Not specifically these two as they are pretty well behaved, but another of our sheep. I went to grab her and she took off. I threw my foot forward to catch my ballance and kicked a tree stump as I swung forward. Anywho, we have two sheep breeds, jacob and karakul. The girl in front (Ester, a karakul) is, at this point, still in her lambs fleece and Crystal (jacob) is a two year old. Both are now fully shorn (we won't discuss how well) and now Crystal resembles a miniture holstein

Next is another quick project I did. Too much hay was being wasted (by these guys ... there are two more females avoiding the camera)

and I needed to find a better way than a standard hay rack. I saw a trough at one of the local HTers places and thought that would do the trick but being exposed I needed to upgrade it a bit, and this is what I came up with ...

Of course I went over board with some of the construction methods but after a hard storm I had found the ground washed out underneath the trough where it was actually hanging from the barn wall behind it, while the large female goat slept in the trough. So, my over engineering paid off I guess. Anywho, nothing all that special a box for my hay....

and finally, the only one on the whole place who seems to know how to really appreciate a warm spring day is Aeungus.

We could all be better off if we took a few life lessons from a basset hound.

Well that's it for now. Hopefully it wasn't too much of a narcissistic ramble.

Glad the pictures were enjoyed. It's been a busy year around here and this only shows a few of the projects/ animals we have on this small place. I've been pretty lax on getting my blog updated so I ran around the other day doing catch up pics of a number of different things. The blog btw is mostly just a family update not much of a "homesteading blog" itself.

Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks for the pics. I've got a bamboo growing out of my ears and I'm needing an enclosure to keep the chickens and goats out of the garden. So guess what I'm doing this weekend. LOL

The sheep are quite fond of the greens as well, so if you've got any green eaters you might keep the leaves for fodder.

As for your fencing project, the height and unpleasentness involved in trying to perch atop the bamboo is what sold me on the idea. We shall see how well it works. I am "planting" the bamboo about 10 staves to the foot. If your bamboo is of similar diameter (averages a finger size (depending on your fingers)) you should be able to use that figure to estimate the number of staves you need. At that density I get plenty of light through so there should be no problem in surrounding a garden with it.

Good luck.
