Just got an 8N... of course now I need...

an 8n transmission.

the tractor has a sherman on it. the tractor was stuck and wouldn't move (I got a good price for this region and the shape of the tractor) I got it out of gear and found out the problem. Teeth missing out of the transmission. SO...

Either I need one fairly local

Or someone to bring the one that's on ebay down in AL... LOL!

You know individual gears and components are readily available for that tractor and transmission, right? From your NewHoland dealer to the web companies that specialize in the N series tractors.

We just had our 8N rebuilt by a place here in Indiana called N Complete...they specialize in the Ford N tractors. I think they ship too. If you want, I can get you their contact info, just send me a PM or email me.

As others mentioned, the big plus side of an old Ford "N" is the great availability and affordability of parts. They are also pretty easy to work on.

The downside is they are 50+ years old, low power, and pretty limited compared to a modern tractor. Also high price for what they are. Kinda like old Jeeps.

As others said and you already know they are pretty cool tractors. Parts are readily available and they are simple to work on. The fact it has a Sherman transmission option is great, i hope it's a step down model to increase engine speed and decrease ground speed, they made a few versions.
unfortunately with the equipment that's available now the N's are pretty outdated, underpowered, collectibles more than everyday work tractors. I've owned one for over 20 years and I've attempted to do everything possible with it, many times coming up short from it's shortcomings. Then I made the error of using and then owning a 70's era diesel Ford tractor. My 8N is now like most others as it's used for riding around on and very light duty jobs and is awaiting restoration.

Bob,

I wish I had known you were looking for an 8n, we might have worked something out on the one I have (I'm planning on getting something larger).

There might be someone clsoer but Dales Tractor service (down towards Carrollton) might be albe to get you parts.

I also have a manual for the 8n if you have a question or want to take a look at it.

I've got a diesel MF, but it's an industrial and isn't really good for the field, heavy as all get out. But I use it for pulling trailers and the loader gets a workout very regularly.

The 8N will be for hayrides on our small hay trailer, brushhogging, pulling my 2 bottom and discing. We only have around 13 acres so it will work just fine and I love those old fords.

I found a 8N trans on Ebay for 299 but the shipping is 170 bucks... so I am trying to see if local sources are cheaper.

my brother rebuilds/restores 8n. He is in the adirondacks of ny on Schroon Lake. If you can't find anything local pm me and I will put you in touch with him. He may have some sources closer to you too. He restores tractors from all over the ne area.

I was looking for a good 8n for a couple of years, locally, on e-bay etc.
I guess everyone now thinks their cool,cause the prices for "junk'is pretty high, and a restored one is off the map.
Finally broke down and bought a new tractor, as I wanted to "use it", not work on it.
Congrats on your find, 'cause I'm still looking for a "deal".

We got a Jubilee ( Betsy) a few years ago and love it. The fellow we bought it from had named and owed her for 27 years. He shed a tear as they parted I used it for pullling a double shovel, brush hogging and disking. As well as pulling logs and such. She runs like a top. They ought to make machines like that now, that will run 50 plus years with only minor repairs. Betsy is all origial, still 6 volt and all. The only problem is the lights don't work. I haven't gotten around to fix'n them yet.
Just think, get that trany in and you might be good for another 50 years.

I was telling my 7 year old daughter and 5 year old son that one day they could still be working with the same tractor.

Be sure to have an overrun clutch on the PTO for bush hogging.

There's another Sherman tranny on n-complete's Classified ads. It's in W. VA though. There's a chance you could find another guy looking for a Sherman rebuilder and be able to recover some of the cost.

Bob, my husband has an 8N and a 9N with a Sherman backhoe on it out back. He's always buying parts for them, so I will ask him where he goes. I think we are pretty close to you. You are right about passing yours on to the boys! My husband's 8N belonged to his dad, and I'm sure one day our son will be plowing with the same tractor. Wish cars would last like that! I'll ask him tonight and get back to you. I think the one place is in Randolph.

Are the teeth broken in the Sherman or in the factory transmission? If in the Sherman you could install a factory input shaft and eliminate the Sherman until you could find parts.

My 9N

I have a '42 9N that is a worker. If you don't mind tinkering, it is a great machine. I use mostly the brush hog and box blade.
