what would you do?

Ok here is my situation. We are selling our camper we will be getting 3,400.00 for it. The first thing we WERE going to do is pay down a debt. Well Now we have a chance to get 2 pregnant highlands one is a milker, two baby dexters(not in cement) boy and girl non related. and two steer jersey. Plus have money for supplies we need for them.
Im in a tug of war on what to do. THe money we owe is intrest beairing. But the deal on the cattle is a once in a life time. And specifacly chosen for me.
We would have plenty of meat and can sell some. Plus god willing well have 2 babys from the cows.
We realy want the cattle. ANd the debt will only be half paid. What would you do?

Go for the cattle. If needed they can be resold if you get in a pinch.

How much do you still owe on the debt? Will this pay off a big chunk of it, or just a drop in the bucket? What is the interest rate?

On the other hand, if you DON'T buy the cows, how much will you be paying to buy meat and milk for the next several years?

Are the cows TRULY a good deal? $3400 sounds like a lot of money for 6 cows, but I don't know. Do you have hay and grazing area?

Highland run 1800 per unbread. 500 fresh weined bull. two pregnant for 1600 is a steal. I have 5 acr to run them on and I trade with a farmer down the road for grain so Im sure we can barter for hay when needed.

The money will pay off half. the intrest keeps going up.now its 17.94%
we have two cars to sell one van and my husbands "midlife crisis truck" not to mention a raptor and many other things. we just need buyers.

its only 2580 for the cattle so well have money left over. we spend $14 on milk atleast a week here not including cheese and meat.
the one cow is a gurenteed (sp) milker. Health and temperment is perfect. Gaurenteed.

My suggestion? Pay down the debt first. Then buy a couple of milk goats, and maybe a Boer doe or two for meat kids. You have enough land to raise all their feed and then some -- you could even raise your own grain if you had to. That would give you your milk supply, some meat (eventually all your meat, as you grew your herd), it would cost a whole lot less, and allow you to get the debt paid down, too. Best of both worlds. (And goat milk and goat meat are just as good as milk and meat from cows.)

husband wont do goats. I have tried to get him to agree but no deal. I raise meat rabbits and chicken plus eggs. I can do just the pregnant cows. no biggie. I would love to have the dexters also. I could be breeding 3 girl who knows 5 girls soon.
I already have people asking for beef. If we sold the truk and van it would pay the debt off totally.

My thought...

I'm usually one that goes for paying the debt first, then you will have that much more free money down the road. But the once in a lifetime offer is just that, once in a lifetime. Unless the debt involves keeping a roof over your head, go for the cows and put the rest on the debt.

DITTO,
I dont blame your husband I have the worst luck with goats I LOVE cows I would take them but work really hard to get rid of that debt I cant imagine paying 17% interest I am losing sleep over paying the bank 6% on my house mortgage. I would get rid of that debt by working hard and never do debt again if I was you. BUt jump on those cows I sure would if I was you. Dexter are $500 each where I live usualy

Get the two bred cows....maybe the dexter bull calf (for breeding to highlands?)

Pay more on the debt ....17-18% is highway robbery!

Buying $14 worth of milk is a whole lot less time consuming than milking unless you have the time, energy and desire....

17.94%?!? Is this on a credit card or what? If it is, do you get other credit card applications in the mail that let you transfer balances for free and pay 0% for 6 or 12 months?

While I hate to have debt, this does sound like a deal you can't pass up. However, I would either get a lower interest rate loan through a bank, transfer the balance onto another credit card at a lower interest rate (watch for fees though!), or even call the company and ask them to lower the interest rate. Alot of times, the credit card company will lower the interest rate if you just call and ask and threaten that if they don't, you are going to close the account.

While I'm not recommending you get sucked into more credit card debt, if it takes getting a new card and transferring the balance for a lower interest rate, that is what I would do.

I would get the cows.... you can always sell the babies... if you need to. Plus if one is a boy you can line breed with the other cow. i would definately get the cows.

yes its a credit card. I was 4hrs late on the payment and they JACKED up the % from 4 to 17.94 and it keeps going up. I really should call and see if they will lower it.
I just keep throwing away the credit card applications. I should see about transfering it. Im just sick over it. We were in debt bad!!!!!!! dh was taking care of the bills and when he finaly handed it over to me we were close to loosing most everything. In 6 mts I got 35,000 worth of debt paid off by liquidating assets. I still have several things to sell. Which im trying. if i can sell the truck and van this debt is gone!

No this debt wont make us loose the house it just more a pain in the butt.

I think Ill get the two bread cows and baby bull and pray for a boy baby that can become meat. TY all

This is too easy.

Sell the camper for $3400 and put the money in the bank..and leave it there.
Then tell your husband to sell the $7000 trailer..and go buy your cows with some of that money..then pay off the debt with the rest of that money. If after paying off the entire debt..there is any money left over..go buy your supplies.

Were the cows all registered? If not then maybe there were not worth the money.

they are not I dont want registered. Regisetered (highland)goes for 1800 per cow unbred. the bull I looked at was 1200 without papers but he has papers w/ papers hes 2000. The babies are 500 new born. Dexters go for 1600 w/o papers and aroud 2000 w/papers. Jursey steer are 40.

So my 800 per pregnant cow 2yo
300 per bull dexter baby
600 per baby heifer
I figured was dang good.

He still ows 6900 on the trailer. He said to me lets go to the bank to see how much it would be to finance the trailor and i figured ok well tickle his fancy but hell see its to much we cant do it. Next thing I know hewas signing papers and coughing up over 700 our only savings. I was peved still am and it just sits. I told him he has 3 mts to have it make money and its been 4 and here it sits. Im mad. He has yet to contact anyone to haul stuff. We even had friends tell him about amish who needed hauling and here it sits.
Oh no im venting i gotta stop sorry!!!!

Been there - done that !!! Oh let me tell you !!!

Have you called a credit councellor? They can have the extra charges stopped immediately.
Tell DH to stuff it, and sell the trailer. Ask him how hungry he has to get before he realizes that credit can't buy happiness.
You can't EAT a trailer, you can eat a cow.

Like Wildoutdoorsman says, "Use your womanly powers girl!"
