What is the best exterior house paint?
We will be painting our home this spring. We are looking for a good quality paint that will last longer than a few years and that will hold up to the elements well. What is liquid siding? If one uses a paint sprayer, do you still have to brush the paint in? Thanks.

I use high quality paints. I have learned my lessons painting with the cheap or sale brands. They take many more coats and do not last as long or are they as strong.
I like Glidden for painting Inside and out. It is priced right and good quality one coat paint many times.
Behr also make a great one coat paint. You will pay a bit more, but it is worth it!
True Value store brand! Yep, a store brand. It is about the best I have found. It is about 2 bucks a gallon cheaper then Glidden, but they stand behind it and it is great paint.
The only stuff I use Sirwin Willams paint for is Out side and painting on Brick.
I have tried it many times and lots of diff types. I just am not impressed. I like the True Value, Glidden and Behr the best.
If You are spraying. Plan on 10+% more paint NOT less.
If You use good paint and prepair the home for paint. Rolling and brushing will be a simple one coat job.

For questions like this, I always check with Consumer Reports at the library.

Two years ago Benjamin Moore was rated at the top. We used it and it went on beautiful and we used 4 gallons LESS than we did with other brands. It has held up really well. Paid about $23 per gallon.

paint
My husband likes Valspar...they also make Walmart brand paint. So being the tightwad that I am I use the Walmart brand on the sheds. The house gets the real thing.

Porter paint if you can get it in your area.Ive used it 5-6 days a week for the last 18yrs.They have an especially good primer called bonding primer.IF you cant get it in your area ,the Behr paint at Home Depot is pretty good. They dont have a good primer unfortunately.

In the last few min I did a search for best exterior paints. I had never did this before. I am glad to see Behr and Glidden are high rated. I also see S Williams is the lowest of the bucket with sears.
I am kinda mad I didn't research this before like you are.
I alwasy went and just bought paint. TRUST ME THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT. Doing it this way cost me a ton of money and wasted time.
I finally was sick og it and was at my local lumber yard. I walked in the door and the guy asked me. Lance you need paint I see. I said yep. He said "I have some cheap stuff over here we will not be selling anymore." I told him. KEEP IT, I AM NOT INTERESTED". He looked at me and asked me what ws wrong in his old grandpa face.
I told him I need 6 gallons of YOUR BEST 1 COAT COVERAGE. I also told him price is not a problem. Just if it dosn't cover in one coat. I am comming back for my money.
First thing out of his mouth. Got to get Behr or Glidden. "ONLY BRAND WE WILL GIVE BACK MONEY ON". I never knew they did such a thing! All the wasted years.
I spend 28 bucks a gallon. I was used to spending 8 bucks a gallon. I also only got 4 gallons after Frank talked me out of the extra two. He was "sure" I would not need them. He was right. I still had paint left over. No primeing, just prepping and great coverage with one coat.
I could not belive it. I was thinking of the many houses and such I painted and friends homes I helped paint that took two days and two SOMETIMES three coats.
I did learn, do not get cheap on your exterior paint. You can get a little cheap on interior, but that is a TOTAL diff thing.
I still know of some cheap 13 dollar interior paint that will cover better and with normally one coat that the 28 dollar paints can not even come close too.

You can buy the best paint in the world and it won't make any difference if your preparation work is lacking. Applying the paint to the house is the easy part, getting ready to paint is the hard part. Make sure all loose paint is removed and the bare areas primed, all glossy surfaces are dulled, all existing mildew is killed, and the entire surface is washed. Then, before you paint, remove any dried or loose caulking and replace it.

Like Cabin Fever says.. Proper prep work has got to be done..
I like to use Pittsburgh, Benjamin Moore, Behr...
My local Pittsburgh store sells their mix-match paint for 4 dollars a gl.. even if it's the $30+ stuff... So for my chicken coops, sheds etc.. I just go periodically to the store and buy all their light or dark ext. paint and box it all together in 5 gallon buckets.. For the coops and sheds, it doesn't really matter on the color scheme as much.. LOL
If you get all light colors, you usually end up with a cream/lt. tan color and if I want it to be per say light purple and there's a gl. or two there I'll get those to add to it etc. to get a different color to make sure I have enough paint to finish the project..
I went there once and found some interior paint that was nice colors.. I ended up getting 3 gallons of a med yellow color and 2 gallons of a light lavender color and it was the $30+ a gallon stuff.. I couldn't resist.. My neice took the yellow for her bedroom and my grand neice took the lavender for hers.. So they both got their rooms painted at a total cost of $20..
I buy the mix-matched stuff so much the owner calls me sometimes to let me know when he has some piled up and ready for me to go through.. LOL
So those who just need some for those projects outside, and a precise color doesn't matter, check out the mix-matched paints to get it cheaper.. I know our local Lowe's also sells their mix-matched paints.. Sometimes they have it in 5 gallon buckets too for the large projects.. They sell theirs for $5.00 a gallon..

...................I'm currently repainting the interior of my living area and I'm using the 15 year paint from Wal-Mart . It works very well , 1 coat and costs $11.44 for 1 gallon . The semi gloss enamel is very thick and easy to apply and looks very good . I've been treating both walls and ceiling with TSP...trisodium phosphate , mixed with warm water and applied to all surfaces . fordy...

My great uncle built barns and homes throughout his working life. His only comment on exterior paint was-"Devoe-oil base-do it right." He was an artist in some respects, but latex paint drove him crazy. I suppose Devoe has gone the way of the dinosauer by now, but we always used it on the farm and it lasted extremely well in west central Ohio. Dan

We got a great deal when we painted our livingroom. Went to Home Depot, knew we wanted something by Behr in a light blue shade... ended up coming home with 3 gallons of paint at half price because they were specially mixed for some lady who returned them when she decided she didn't like the color. Love Behr, and will use it again on our next place.
