ABC News Tonight to have a segment on female farmers

I imagine there is a difference between female homesteaders and female farmers but thought someone might be interested.

I saw it tonight. It was a very short piece about how their are 85% more female farmers. I imagine you could find the piece on their web site.

It was a interesting short peice about it. Just basically stated that the number of female farmers have increased by 85 percent compared to 14 percent by males. Most of them doing the organic gardening and selling at farmers markets.

Part of the message my Pastor preached yesterday was "A person is a poor farmer if he only raises for his own use and no one elses".

I didn’t see the show but here are some interesting statistics on women farmers:

According to the 2002 Census of Agriculture, 27.2% of all farm operators in the U.S. were women. There were a total 237,819 principal women operators in the U.S. in 2002. Women farmers most commonly manage small farms
and specialize in livestock production. The average age of women farmers in the U.S. was 51.9 years old.

I thought that cooking the butternut squash at the farmer's market was a good idea. Using smell to attract shoppers is both subtle and powerful. Using taste to sell one's produce is equally subtle and powerful. One can discuss recipes much longer than one can extol the virtues of winter squash and the roles of seller/buyer mellow.

Also interesting that all ten interns at Rodale Institute were female. Women definitely seem more into organic than men. I try to be as organic as possible, but when it comes to things like fireants, I am quite willing to compromise my organic virtue.
