lost dog
my friend lost Maxx. he was lost before Thanksgiving in Raleigh NC. His tag had fallen off his collar. He got out of a ball field at his work place. Maxx is a boxer that likes people so much that he will get into a strangers car. We have called every where we know to call, put adds in news papers, put up flyers, and they have walked the streets with Katie the other dog to try and find him. What else should we do to get Maxx back.

i hate to tell you but a boxer probably will not be on the streets very long without some picking it up...
one trick i have heard hunters using is to put an aritcle of the owners clothing where they last saw the dog.. the dog will sniff around and settle down with the clothing..for a while anyway.

Well you didn't say where you called, so maybe you already did some of this, but:
* Call all vet's offices for 10 or 20 miles and report him lost, give description or pic, and your contact info
* Do the same for all private and public animal rescues in the area, including any boxer breed specific rescues
* Do the same with the authorities--dog catcher, city/county/state police, etc.
* Do the same at local places of congregation--schools, churches, office buildings, community centers
* Do the same at local doggy facilities--pet stores, training schools, dog parks, groomers, boarding facilities
* Offer a reward if you can afford one, no questions asked--it may bring a petty thief out of the woodwork, or at least someone who has info
* Be persistent--make a list of all the places you left your information, and call them regularly to see if they have any news
* Try leaving dog food out with an item of yours in the place where you lost him--if it disappears, you will know that something has been there (hopefully Maxx), and it will encourage him to keep returning to the spot
* Try going back to the spot regularly and asking people there if they were there that day and/or if they've seen him wandering alone or with another person
He probably has to surface eventually--either as a stray, or out on a walk with people, or at the vet, or whatever. If a person took him in to keep him safe, they are probably asking/looking around to see if someone lost him. I took in a stray boxer mix once, and finally found his owner by walking him over to the local vet, who recognized him. And even if someone stole him, it is pretty likely they live in the area, and if you are persistnt, you might just hear of some Maxx sightings eventually. I'm so sorry you've lost your friend. Good luck finding him.

Try everything that hisenthlay said - and don't give up! Someone will know that he is lost...they are probably trying to find you right now.
*Hugs* to you. Here's hoping for a safe a quick return.

My brother had his dashound stollen one time in Calif. He was gone over a year. One day my brother stopped at a liquor store before going home. In the car next to him was his dog. My brother called him by name and the dog went bolistic. Well my brother followed the car and found out where the person lived, then the next day stole his dog back when he caught him outside.
After my brother and his wife divorced she took the dog and moved to Ohio. He lived with her and died of old age. Was sure a good obedient dog.

This is a very trying time for our family. I gave Maxx to my friend five years ago and he is in his last week of nursing school. I don't have the money to go and help him find his dog..his time is limited. This is a forum to ask for help when needed and give help when you have answers. Your two responses to this thread aren't helpful. Your vindictiveness towards me is out of hand.

Have tried many of these suggestions...didn't know about specialty groups. Thank you for your time and support. Search begins again tomorrow. My friend talked to someone who saw Maxx running loose, close to the time he was first lost. Thank you for all your help.

Did you try going door to door for a couple hours? Sometimes children will find a dog and not try very hard to find owners (some kids pretend to try..but secretly hope to keep the dogs). Sometimes going door to door in a specific radius of the place last seen will let people know who otherwise might not be aware..or somebody might have heard something from someone else. We 'lost' a tri-collie several years ago and found him via another person who had heard about some kids who had found a dog. Turns out the kids fell in love with him and were really hoping the owner couldn't be found. We gave the kids a reward and thanked them over and over again. We wanted to be sure that they knew we appreciated their 'love' for our dog..but that we were also very happy to have him back.
So..please take the time to knock on a few doors if you haven't already done so. I do so hope you find the dog.

i work in raleigh almost every day and i know a lot of people who live in and around raleigh. if you tell me specifically where maxx was lost and what he looks like, etc, it is possible that i know someone near there who i can tell to keep an eye out. I could also perhaps put your friend in touch with someone who lives near the area.

Glad I could be of a little help. I think the going door to door suggestion is a good one, too. I know you're too far away, but I hope your friend will pursue that.
I found a few links for groups you might try contacting. Some of them will even post your lost dog's pic on their site:
http://www.cbr.homestead.com/index.html
http://www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com/
http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/NC18.html
http://www.ncbxrrescue.org/
and some more general listing of NC area rescues
http://www.ncneighbors.com/search/FindGroups.wsi?cat=18
http://www.animalrescue.net/links.php
If you go down the list and call these groups, I'm sure they'll have more good searching suggestions for you specific to the Raleigh area. They know the ins and outs, they know who to talk to, and may have mailing lists/rescue chat groups they could post on. They'll also probably be happy to take your info and maybe post it on their sites (that's easy--the hard thing is getting a no-kill shelter to take in a stray dog, which is usually why I call them).
You can also try posting his pic here on HT--never hurts to try.
Good luck and best wishes. Let us know if you come up with any good news. I'll be thinking of you.

This is from the pet forum. Posting Pics:

We LOVE to see pictures of everybody's dogs! Since I just figured out how to post an appropriately sized picture I thought I would provide instructions for anybody who is computer-impaired like myself!
If you wish to post a photo, it first must be posted on the Internet somewhere (not just on your computer). I personally use photobucket.com (it's free and easy to use). Once your picture is posted on photobucket all that needs to be done is to copy the whole IMG link and paste it into your post. Please remember that all age groups view this forum. All photos deemed inappropriate will be deleted. Also please limit your photo size to 640X480 pixels or less. If it is larger than that, viewers will have to scroll across to see the whole picture.
|
You have to have your photos on a CD/floppy, or on your computer somehow, or be able to scan them in for this whole thing to work, obviously.
I use snapfish.com instead of photobucket because it seemed easier to me. Once you have your picture on their site (at least for snapfish), you can just open the picture, right click on it to get to "properties", then copy the long IMG link (make sure to get the whole thing) and paste it into your post. If you want the picture to appear in the post, instead of just the link to it, higlight the IMG link and click on the little yellow icon at the top of the post area that has the mountains and moon on it.
That's it. Easier than it sounds.
