Hi FreeinAlaska,

You mentioned on that other post that you have a 12 day old baby and an outhouse? And it's 0 degrees and snowing? How do you manage all of this? Do you have running water indoors?

I just never thought of managing a newborn without all the comforts of home so ever since I saw your post I've been thinking about how I would handle it.

Congratulations on your new baby!

Thank you ellebeaux and grandmotherbear. Having a new son is a great blessing. All five of our other children are also happy. It's still 0 and snowing, but should drop to -25 after it clears over the next day or so.

Ellebeaux, no we don't have running water. A large pot on the wood stove provides ample hot water. I have been cheating a bit over the last couple of weeks using our truck to haul water instead of the dog team.

Having a newborn in our rustic home really just falls into place. We do everything everyone else does it just takes more effort. We've been backwoods homesteading and raising kids for close to twenty years so we like to think of ourselves as old hands at it.

As for the comforts of home.....the house is warm and cozy , moose stew is simmering on the top of the woodstove, our home grown thanksgiving chickens are thawing out in the kitchen and it's absolutely beautiful outside. I don't know how much more comfortable I can get.

I give my wife thanks and most of the credit. She is the beautiful and tough, 100 pound, baby on hip, homeschooling, wood splitting, gourmet cooking backwoods girl and best friend of mine. I may bring home the money, firewood and meat, but it's her efforts that pull it all together.

I am in awe reading your post! I mean, I know that's what people used to do and I do want to follow a similar path. But I guess 'real' homesteading still seems a little awkward and stressful to me. So I honor your ability to make it sound so easy and natural...

thanks and have a wonderful blessed Thanksgiving,

Beaux
