Don't know what your house is made of. if it was large timbers or native lumber it could have been something relieving internal stresses. Its amazing how long it can take for that to happen. My place is 15 years old and it still has a little crack or groan now and then

But that may be because the eaves are rotting off LOL

On the other hand if its a normal framed house I would keep a n eye around for a header or something might have let loose.

Haaa

Similar to the dozen and a half bottles of Root Beer in the basement, that exploded on a hot day during the summer!

That's pretty funny! That reminds me of the the time I was asleep in my bed and woke up at 2 a.m. to a huge crash followed a few seconds later by cold water splashing on me.

My room was in the basement below the kitchen sink so I was sure a pipe had burst. I ran screaming up the stairs for my mother. We searched the whole kitchen, pulled everything out from under the sink but couldn't find anything.

Well...then I shoved the nosy cat out of the way - she was all wet but just on one side. Hmmm. We figured out what happened: My stoopid cat tried to jump up on the kitchen counter but missed. She fell into the dog's water bowl and knocked it over. The water ran down the edge of the cabinet, through the floorboards and down the edge of the lamp fixture over my bed!

Man, we were mad...

I'm glad your big bang noise was nothing worse!

A couple of years ago I had a big bin of ice cubes in my freezer that had all frozen together so I took the whole mess out and tossed it in the sink to thaw and went to bed. I awoke in the middle of the night and heard various bumps and rattles from the kitchen which sounded like someone rummaging through the drawers and ransacking the place. Grabbed the .45 cal Glock and surefire light out of the nightstand and headed to the kitchen full of hate and discontent. I popped around the corner spewing profanity and ready to start pumping 230 grain Cor-Bons into whoever had invaded my domicile and seen ice cubes dropping from the bin into the stainless steel sink. Felt like a genuine ass.

i have been jumping out of bed for 20 years to catch the mystery "thumper" in my house. i have never seen anyone. it is most likely the flying squirrels that live here from time to time. that or my eaves rotting off, lol. i have a stone foundation that is crumbling from water damage. the house settles alot. i guess that could be it too.
