Boy this post takes me back,,,haven't smoked a pipe in about 15 years..
i tried a bunch of off shelf...just about all were too harsh or bit the tongue..captain black was pretty good, but the smoke was pretty sweet..i finally setteled on a custom blend from a pipe shop..pretty much like a toned down captain black. best pipe i had was from an unopened pipe kit i purchased at a goodwill store.. had a bent stem and a block of merchisum(i killed the spelling on that) . it was kinda fun carving the block into a one of a kind pipe. smoked great.

Been smoking pipes for year or three (more than 40)... My grandfather and his brother smoked half and half rolled in a Cigarette (so probably was the first tobacco I borrowed)... been smoking half and half in pipes ever since (my dad smoked a pipe at home, and cigarettes at work).
Captain Black has a soapy taste to me. (most "aromatic" tobaccos seem to to me). Most people I know that smoke a "aromatic" tobacco, smoke it for other people... not themselves.
The true key is a well broke in pipe. I'd rather break in a new pair of elephant boots than a new pipe! (seems like it takes me 18 months to 2 years to break one in - probably because I don't force myself to smoke it often enough). Now days you can buy estate pipes (used) on e-bay, and just have the bit replaced.
I hope you enjoy smoking a pipe. Again, I do suggest you buying a used (already broke in pipe or 3) pipe.

I used to smoke cigarrettes but then changed to a pipe for years cause nobody ever complained when I smoked it. Inhaled it too which is like smoking 5 cigarettes at once. I quit after a 3 month bout with bronchitis 4 years ago. Captain black gold.

I smoke a pipe, but after any can of smoke I MUST rotate to something else. So I really dont smoke the same brand, two cans in a row.

Wonderful Memories..............
Oh My!
This thread brings back some wonderful memories, & longings.
I started smoking cigarettes & pipe, at about 17.
Smoked 'til I was about 24 & quit when they first started talking about health issues. That was in 1964. DSW quit too.
After about 15 years she became an EMT on ambulances. And began smoking on the sly. Didn't take me long to find out though. So I went back to my pipes.
I always loved the aroma of aromatic pipe tobacco. Black Cavendish, Rum & Maple, Captain Black(the milder ones) Oh, and Amphora and English, from the
Tobacco store.I ALWAYS Inhaled pipe smoke.
I'd draw it into my mouth, push it out & inhale it up my nostrils. Wonderful.
Well, DSW left us and after a few years, I quit again. I know it is not good for me.
Then, when I turned 55, I was walking by a tobacco store and smelled
that wonderful aroma. So, I bought some Captain Black.
That was 10 years ago.
I smoked until I had an asthma attack, about 5 years ago. I'd never had asthma before. The Pulmonary Doc said if I didn't quit I was gonna DIE.
So, I quit.
I could always smoke or not. I control the situation.
I've been quit for five years. I miss my pipes. They are in plastic bags,
up in the storage room, along with a couple pouches of tobacco.
I "long" to smoke them & suck in that wonderful aromatic smoke.
Guys if I ever get a terminal illness, I'm gonna sure light up................
Good old Captain Black.
Have fun, if ya can.

I smoked a pipe for years and then gave it up cold turkey 20 years ago. But come fall, theres something about that time of year that makes me yearn for one last pipe of tobacco. I used to smoke Captain Black too but the taste bothered me after awhile and I went to Prince Albert and one they used to sell at the tobacco counter in the student Union, Old Virginia or some such. Not sure if its even made anymore. But dont smoke anything that has turkish Latikia in it. That stuff used to take the top right off my head. If you take up a pipe, go out and rake some leaves and take a puff for me....

I smoked a pipe for almost exatly 40 years, and finally quit last February. Had to do something about my blood pressure.
I always smoked Sir Walter Raleigh. Nothing else tasted right to me. If I couldn't get it, I'd smoke Prince Albert of Velvet, but didn't really like them. I could not abide aromatic tobacco, and custom blends always tasted like locorice to me.
My dad was also a pipe smoker and he only smoked Union Leader (unless he was using my pouch).
I found the best way to break in a pipe was to half fill it with tobacco, get it lit, then hold it out the the window of a moving car until it got too hot to hold. Broke in real fast without burning my mouth - but be careful as you can burn a hole in the pipe if you're not careful.
Also I would often hold the empty pipe out the car window to make sure it was completely dry before filling it.
Be careful. Pipe smoking is definately harder to quit than cigarettes. A pipe is a much more efficient nicotine delivery system, and the gum/patches don't deliver enough punch to help relieve any cravings. Plus, the smoking cessation programs are specifically structured for cigarette smokers.

I used the window treatment to break in a pipe, but after I burnt out the 2nd pipe I quit that method. It's a art knowing when to pull the pipe in.
I still suggest buying a estate pipe on E-Bay and replacing the bit. It's already broke in (and after a couple of loads you don't taste the tobacco the other person smoked), and you can get some good pipes at a reasonable price.
I have smoked corn cob pipes (they used to be referred to as Missouri Meerschaum), but still prefer the more traditional pipes. I even tried a soap stone pipe once (the "original" native Americans pipe).
