Who we are and What we want. Now Where is it?

After a lot of thinking and discussing my wife and I have come to realize
that air and water quality are extremely important factors to consider when
we move.

Personally I'd like to get off grid or at least have some options that would
keep power bill to minimum.

Now as to where to move that's the rub. Each place seems to have it's own can o' worms. If it's near a Rural sprawl there's gangs and drugs, Up in the far
reaches of Missouri there's the meth labs and intolerant clannish folks.
Montana seems to have water problems and California is ...Well California is
just plain weird. So that leaves maybe Nebraska or perhaps South Dakota.
We've looked at Tennessee and found a spot or two that might work.

Have you ever read Louis L'amour Sackett tales? We'd like to have friends
like the Talons and Sacketts.

Since I don't know how much or how little you guys know about us I may be
retelling our histories but here goes. I was born and raised in NC. My
mother left me at 6 months old. My Aunt and her son raised me. I grew up on
a farm that had very little amenities. It was 1976 when we got indoor
plumbing and it was 1980 when we first got a telephone. We got A/C in 1992.
Maybe that is why I try to give my family more of the creature comforts. I
know how it felt not to have them.

I graduated From High School in the Academic Top Ten. I invented the Gas Spring Safety Clamp and sold it in 1988. From there I invented the Good Health Microwave Cookware and in 1992 raised the money to get it off the ground. Due to some bad choices and a molasses speed Board of
Directors we shut down the corporation in 1994.

In 1997 I had Triple By-pass heart surgery. In 2004 after taking insulin and
Actos I developed Congestive Heart Failure. I have good days and rough days.
My wife was in a bad wreck in Florida and has 4 herniated disk in her back.

My wife was born in N.C., Moved to Florida and after 7 years came
back to NC and we hooked up and produced the light of our hearts, our daughter, Angel.

Our Employment background is varied. My background includes business plan
writing, inventing, contract writing, product development, research,
graphics, advertising, book-keeping, management, buyer, retailer,
wholesaler and creative problem solver.

My wife’s background includes management, assembly, research, creative arts
and computers. She can upload data from cameras, scanners or off the net.
Has experience in handling employees, customer complaints, and sales.

My wife enjoys Cooking, Knitting, Crochet and quilting. She also
is an excellent cook, cake and cookie maker. My hobbies include amateur radio, posting on HT, reading and plinking.

What were looking for is 3-10 acres with mostly trees, 3 bed 2 bath (stick built or brick preferred but will consider mobile/manufactured in great shape), CH&A, storage buildings, garden spot, sweet water (well), Clean Air, Great neighbors, small community, good intermediate school with small classes & terrific teachers, low taxes, inexpensive electricity and employment opportunity with regards to light industrial assembly, clerical, management. Or if the opportunity presented itself and something in the crafts industry was available that'd be cool too. We would prefer to buy for $75,000 or less keeping the payments low.

So where in the USA is this located?

Please send pictures and driving directions.

Can't give you an EXACT house but it seems the midwest is quite cheap,I recall someone posting a farmhouse on a few acres for less than half of what you want to spend...Nebraska or Iowa-one of those flat, square states

Employment will be the problem of course...but if you can lower your housing costs considerably it might help...

Good luck.

Exclamation Please think carefully!

I live in the great state of SD and have all my life. Here is a link to the Sioux Falls, SD newspaper. It is called The Argus Leader. Sioux Falls is the biggest town in SD at around 130,000 people.

http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

There are, I believe, 68 different languages spoken in the Sioux Falls area. I think it is actually more than that. Definetly a diverse population!

The Argus has classifieds that you can search which will show you what some of the jobs and houses are like in the area. Wed and Sun are the days that have the most job listings. I can tell you that you will not find the type of acreage you are looking for close to Sioux Falls. I know I have tried What you are looking for would run right around $150,00+ close to Sioux Falls.

That being said- there are smaller towns that still have good job opportunities where the land may be cheaper. I do not know as I prefer not to drive that far in the winter time to get to work. If you are interested, look up Watertown, Aberdeen, Yankton and Brookings SD.

You said you have CHF and your wife has a bad back. I would not consider moving to SD with those conditions. We tend to have snow and lots of it! It is also a damp cold up here so arthritis will hurt more. I would think very carefully about moving to an area with snow. It is fairly common to get 4+ inches of wet heavy snow overnight. I am 30 and in fairly good shape. MY DH is slightly older and in fairly good shape. We are both sweating and tired by the time we shovel our driveway and sidewalks. After the first storm like this of the season, the news media does a story on how many people had heart attacks while out shoveling and the oldest one was 40. Anyone older than that has lived long enough to know how to shovel this wet heavy snow.

I am not trying to discourage your dreams. I am just trying to give you the facts about living in this state. Also with this time of year, the emergency services will have a longer time getting to your acreage in case of a heart attack or any other emergency. Most smaller towns are staffed by volunteers for fire/ambulance which also slows down responce time.

If none of this scares you and you are still willing to move here, PM me and I can point you in some directions to look. This state is not for the faint of heart. It is hot and humid in the summer and cold and humid in the winter. You also have to like wind!!!!!! They do not even talk about it being a windy day unless it is blowing 25 mph or more. Today it is blowing 30-40 mph and wind gusts of 50+.

Hopefully this will help you in figureing out where to move to. If you are still interested, I can get you lots of links to different schools, towns, etc.

HTH

Change your binoculars in on a wide angle lens. I was born in NC, left at age 18, traveled all states except 4, and returned to NC in 1985. In my opinion, you can find better "homesteading" type living, more secure employment, better weather conditions, and friendlier people than any other state I have been in. I bought my 1800 sq. ft. home on a half acre for 50,000. I started my business on a 400 dollar investment in 1986, and now have revenues from it between 500,000 and a million annually. Gas and wood heat, a/c, generator driven from pto on tractor for emergencies. I can, freeze, buy bulk, and get from 5 to 10 deer yearly. Well and septic. Beehives bring in a little extra, plus honey for the table. My banker, police chief, fire chief, and attorney call me by first name.
Can't get much better than that.

The area you describe fits our area perfectly. The cleanest water and air in the world and plenty of it. The best hunting and fishing, too many trees, fertile soil, ocean and mountains. Lots of jobs here for those who can pass a drug test and quite fertile for those wishing to start their own businesses. No chance of urban or suburban sprawl reaching this far out in the sticks, we have natural boundaries to prevent that from happening. I have a few neighbors from the Carolinas, they've been here 30 years and will never be going back. You gotta like rain to live here, though.

However, there are no real estate listings meeting the parameters you have given. We are quite inexpensive for Washington, but your parameters would be a very rare find if they could be found at all.

Nooooooope, no way. You'd hate KY (at least the extra little bits of it I'm trying to buy). It's just awful here, uh there I heard. And, and did I mention you'd just wouldn't like it here. Try TN. or IN. Did I mention you'd hate KY.

Oklahoma may be what you are looking for. Cost of living is low. Education is improving. I think our school is good and so was our last one when we were in the city. Maybe we are just lucky, but we've had good schools so far.

As anywhere, the closer to a metro area, the better the jobs. The prettier and more rural, the fewer jobs. There is a lot of land available around OKC that is a very easy drive into the city and pretty reasonably priced, esp if you are willing to go with a mobile home. (Not esp recommended in OK, but there are plenty of them available. Just make sure you have a storm shelter and insurance.) There are also quite a few smaller cities that might have good jobs and like I said prices drop the further from OKC or Tulsa you are.

There are some world class medical facilities in OKC, which may be an issue as you stated you had some health problems.

Winter is very mild. A couple of snows each season, rarely more than a couple of inches. Summer can be pretty hot and humid, but not as bad as in some southern states. Our weather is never boring. (Some might consider that a down side.....LOL!)

Farmer Willy are you sure???? Hmmm seems like we spent 3 months in London, KY and 2 months in Corbin, KY back in 1996. Seemed OK. Corbin was really weird. No rental houses and and not many stick built homes for sale. London had some jobs but nothing my wife wanted to do. Hence it's her fault were in NC. (But don't tell her I said that)

I think Farmer Willy wants to keep Kentucky for himself, if I read him right

3-10 acres of mostly trees? Definately not east of the river in SD. Avoid college towns, housing is too costly.
